Help a newcomer, what can I do with this device? (TomTom XL

Postby maderschramm » Mon Feb 06, 2012 8:46 am

Just got this thing second hand, but to my knowledge it's never been updated. I was browsing your forums but there's a lot to take in at once here. Figured I'd post and come back again in the morning. I saw a thing in the tutorials to give you automatic information (which I've posted below) which should give you more details about my specific device.

I'm wondering what can be done with this thing - can we swap linux kernels? Any android ports? Custom apps?

I'd like to at least update the maps in the thing, what else is there that can be done to tweak and mod it to get the most out of this little toy?

Confirm that this unit has a 1GB internal memory & no SD card slot.

Confirmed, there is no sdcard slot on the device.

Capacity is 979 MB - so it's the 1GB internal storage model.

Make a backup with Win Exp.

Download: http://download.tomtom.com/sweet/navcore/9.205.rider3.CAB-navcore-RIDER.cab

Download: X_ttsystem.9.205.547817.1

Unzip & copy the navcore as well as only the pre-patched ttsystem & PNDNavigator files to your internal, overwriting any common files.

Download: USA_and_Canada_880_3866 PW: navitotal

Remove your old map folder & copy in the new map folder.

Go here: AutoActivate & FastActivate 1.8.8.1 Read the instructions. Download the lite version & patch the map.

Disconnect & reboot.

Thank you for your reply!

Currently backing up my TomTom, while we wait, can you please let me know what these things I'm installing are?

For example, what's a navcore? Is the ttsystem the new firmware?

I assume USA_and_Canada_880 is the new map and the final link is to activate the map so it passes any software checks?

EDIT: Also, for future reference you should let people know the password is navitotal :p

Ok, I have a question here.

Your instructions were, "Unzip & copy the navcore as well as the pre-patched ttsystem & PNDNavigator files to your internal, overwriting any common files."

I've unzipped the navcore and copied the files over onto the TTXL, overwriting any common files. Then I unzipped the X_TTsystem.9... and inside is another ttsystem file, this one smaller than the one contained in the rider3 navcore.

Am I supposed to copy ONLY the PNDNavigator and ttysystem files onto the TTXL from the X_ttsystem.9... and thereby overwriting the navcore's ttsystem file?

If this is the case what are the other files contained in the X_ttysystem.9... file for? There's a hugely populated Outsourced.9205 folder with a much larger bin than the navcores.

You only need the two files but not the folder Outsourced.
And for your question I refer to our help and tutorial section - it should be the first for a newbie to lern the term and basic know how.
Makes it easier when you know what you are actually doing ;)

1. Navcore = Operating System. Think of the ttsystem as the brain of the OS.
2. A good assumption.
3. My apologies. No lame excuse from me!!!
4. If that is what the instructions say, then that is what you do.
5. A lot of the navcores are for 64MB units. The extra files & folders help these 64MB navcores to run on 32MB units. 9.205 is for a 32MB unit, so your XL doesn't need the help.

Incorrect!
The ONE XL (v9) is a 32MB device, or at the device a had was.

What is incorrect?
The Rider models have 32mb Ram, so has the XL, therefor the 9.205 should work just fine.

The point 5 statement above is 100% correct.

Sorry but my mistake.
I read the answer as stating the files are required for 32MB devices to be able to run a 64MB navcore and then made the mistake of linking this to mean the ONE XL is a 64MB unit and therfore did not require the additional files.
You are 100% correct in stating the 9.205 is for the Rider series (32MB) and therefore can be modified to run on a ONE XL.

Thank you.

Just so there is no confusion, 9.205 needs no modification, other than patching it, to run on a ONE XL.
