Installing Tomtom on a Blaupunkt TravelPilot

Hi; season's greetings to all. I was given one of the above satnavs by a relative who had just bought a new unit. I followed the excellent tutorial by fatboyfun (thanks mate) on installing Tomtom on a Wince 5 unit. It is a 64meg unit with 320 x240 resolution.

Following his instructions, I have installed v7.450 and the Uk & ROI maps v880.3866 and patched them.

I am having a few problems though, which i'm hoping you may be able to assist with.

1. I cannot get a satellite lock. I have set the gps to 'other NMEA GPS receiver', set the baud rate to 9600 (and tried all of the others) and set it to COM7 which is highlighted (the only other two options are COM5 and serial cable, and if I choose either of those, the unit warns of 'no gps device'. I have checked these settings on a few Italian and German forums and others are using them OK. All I have is the yellow and black circle, and the warning 'poor gps reception - are you inside a building?'

2. The time is incorrect, and I cannot see anywhere in the usual menu to alter it. I can change the format - 12 hour, 24 hour, but cannot set the time. The time appears correctly on the gps status page however.

I must confess that when I installed the software, I used a shortcut recommended by someone. The Blaupunkt is a Lucca 3.3 model, and in the device are four folders:

a)root (with a my docs, windows, program files and temp folders, and a shortcut to Control panel).

b)My Flash Disk (which has the old and new maps and software in it) and most of the main files and folders etc.

c)Network folder (empty) and

d) an SD card (when inserted).

I have kept the unit as per the original structure - ie when I turn it on, i get the standard Lucca software; warning about using the device by driving, and then a choice of three menu options - navigation, picture viewer, and MP3 player (the last two neither of which I am interested in). If I click on 'navigation', then Tomtom starts. I arrived at this by renaming the original Lucca folder to 'old', and renaming the Navigator folder to Lucca, and inside this renamed Tomtom Navigator.exe to Lucca.exe, so that the menu structure is the same, and fools the unit into thinking it is starting the Lucca maps. I suppose my question is:

Does the Tomtom software look at any boot up ini files before it loads itself, or is it stand alone? This is part of the defaults.ini file:

Is there any easy way to delete and reformat the unit, as i'm not bothered about the old stuff on it, and reload the Tomtom software, but would I need some scripts to point to the navigator folder and navigator.exe files to get it working?

I've never seen one of these devices before, so I will look into it and get back to you.

But about the clock issue, There is no way to set the time from within Tomtom Navigator, on some devices it is just wrong and there is nothing you can do about it, on other devices, sometimes running another GPS app first and allowing it to set the time then running Tomtom works.

Thanks for the swift response; much appreciated. I could not see anywhere in the original Lucca software where to change the time. It seems to be taken from an ini file that has the timezone as GMT+2, but I didnt want to mess around with anything in there.

One thing I did do was remove the four ini files that I had placed in the 'navigator' folder that came from the original Lucca folder. The gps now picks up as another NMEA device, and show lat, long and bearing but no satellite, regardless of the baud rate. It will however plot a route. Not sure if it would work in the car though!

If you need any files from the unit to investigate, please let me know.

Ok i've researched the issue and have a question...

How long have you waited, and were you stationary outside? It can take up to 30 minutes to acquire the first satellite lock on new software.

Tomtom Navigator does not look at any pre-existing files that are on the device, It does load dll's from the Windows directory (ROM) though.

From searching the 'net it appears that this will require a registry edit, and the amount of people who bricked their device attempting it is immense...

Summary: Leave the device "Waiting for satellites..." stationary outside for half an hour while it downloads the satellite data, This data will be refreshed while the device is in use, so you should only need to do it once.

Thanks for getting back to me - I will try the unit tomorrow. It has been outdoors for hours on different baud rates trying to get a lock, but it is still calculating a route.

I'll report back once I have given it a test drive :)

just a thought,wont you have to rename the ttnavigator folder and the .exe to
MobileNavigator and MobileNavigator.exe,i had to do this when i put tt on
my binatone x430,as for the time,it should correct it self when it gets a gps
lock

Hi Magnu420, thanks for the comments. In the dowload provided by fatboyfun, the folder is called 'navigator', and the exe file is tomtom navigator. As I explained, I was trying to fool the unit into thinking that it was loading up the original Lucca.exe file, which is why I renamed both of the tomtom ones. I cant see how renaming them would help, as the settings.ini file (or similar) is pointing to the file path (pathNavi: \My Flash Disk\Lucca\Lucca.exe). I would have thought that as long as I renamed any file or folder to the expected pathname, it would work. If I had not tried to con the system and had put in another gps, then I would need the original folder and filename to run it.

Not sure if fatboyfun concurs?

It makes no difference what the folder/filenames are.

Did you get a satellite lock yet? I couldn't find anyone else with this problem, On the gps status screen do you see any activity? (grey or blue bars)

I didnt think the filenames etc would be an issue.

The unit is saying no satellites - as I mentioned previously it is showing the correct location on lat and long. Strangely enough, I have been using the unit all afternoon in the car, and it is giving perfect instructions, even when it is saying it has no satellites. All the bars on the screen are blank, and in the gps service config screen, all the bars are empty. Once it has got past the 'trying to find a gps signal' warning, it is working fine. Wierd .

I'll keep an eye on it over the next few days.

It may be the way the GPS hardware releases it's information, My WinCE4.2 Medion always had grey bars in the status screen even though it had a lock and would navigate correctly, Maybe PortSplitter may help..?

I have the same with TT on a Navigon. No satelite bars but a good reception. If the colour of the screen change from black and white to color then the GPS reception is alright.

Hi holyhead, that is exactly what it is doing. Doesnt seem to matter what baud rate I choose, as soon as the screen goes coloured i'm good to go . Thanks for confirming this.

Maybe I should have a play with it now and try and put igo8 on it LOL.

There is a "workaround", by starting another GPS app first and allowing it to get a lock, then exiting and starting Tomtom, sorted out the clock issue and gives the correct info in the GPS status screen, Bit of a faff though.

I might give that a go. As the original Lucca software and files are still on the unit, all I need to do is rename the exe files from ***.old. I have the trick to get into file explorer through the unit, and can run the Lucca.exe from there.

I'll let you know how I get on :).

Ok, I reset the unit back to the Lucca software, started it up with a hard reset, and went to the gps page on the menu. It has now picked up 10 satellites LOL. The time clock is updated via the gps (according to the manual I downloaded) but its not playing ball - not that I'm too bothered. I'll leave it for a bit longer, and then rename and reload Tomtom and see how I get on :).

Right, reset back to Tomtom, and time is now showing correctly (thanks fatboyfun for your tip). No satellites showing, but the unit is picking up the route anyway, so happy days :).
