Just wondering if anyone has off road maps for Australia? I found some in another forum but they were last updated in 2009.. this is a favour for a friend and I would love to be able to get it for him.

Yes, as a matter of fact, not only info, but some maps for ttmaps and Ozi too ;)

Ok, time for some basics on the use of other maps on a TT...
Frirst all you need :
A TT with a SD slot and a big SD card.
The program ttmaps by Jean-Claude : [Please Register or Login to download file]
Please read all instructions there first !
Some source for your map data, right now the easiest and best is Mobile Atlas Creator : [Please Register or Login to download file]
Something to convert your map data into the ECW format, I use Global Mapper, but it is not freeware. Links for the latest versions can be found on the net with no big problems.
You don't need the latest, Global Mapper 10 does all you need.
There are other free programs available, please check at the ttmaps website for more info.
Maybe the program ECW Header Editor - maps often are downloaded in the Mercator projection and Global Mapper saves these files with projection name that is not always compatible. More on that when necessary.
An alternative if Google as a map provider is enough would be Google2ttmaps.
As far I know their website is down and the program a bit hard to find, so please use this : 2741

Installation :
Make a full backup of your TT first, using Windows Explorer and not Home!
Install ttmaps and follow the instructions for the installation.
Check if the program works and if all functions on your normal TT setup still work as before.

Google2ttmaps:
Usage :
Start Google Earth and zoom into the area you like to use on your Tomtom.
Check under "Tools ,options" that decimal degrees are used to disply the current position of the cursor!
Move the cursor to the upper left corner of the area you would like to use and write down the coordinates ,same for the lower right corner.
You will notice that there is a N or S for the Latitude and a W or E for the Longitude - you need this info too!
Using the Grid function can make it easier sometimes.

Start Google2ttmaps and in the main window enter the coordinates you just wrote down.
As an example Liberty Island in New York : Max Lat : 40,6912 N
Min Long : 74,075 W
Max Long : 74,0435 W
Max Lat : 40.6883 N

Further down you put in a Name e.g. Liberty Island

Under "map" you set up what type of map you need e.g. Hybrid for airial view plus roads and names for the roads.
"resolution" defines the detail level of the resulting map - the lower the pixel size the more details you get (and the bigger the map will be).
"map tile size" defines the size of the resulting single pictures - I always use 4096x4096 for normal maps and 8192x8192 for large areas.

Press "start" and the program generates the map files.
Depending on the size of your map and the speed of your connection it can take some time!
Do your first tests with some small maps of your hometown to get used to the program settings.

On your Tomtom :

Make a new folder in "ttmaps\maps\" for you new map ,e.g. "Liberty Island" for my example (would look like this : "ttmaps\maps\Liberty Island").
Copy all *.ECW files from the folder "data" of the Google2ttmaps program into the newly created folder on your Tomtom.
Start your Tomtom and go through the menu ,on the last page you will find ttmaps.
Start ttmaps.
After the satellites are found you should see your map on the screen - but only if your current position is inside the map!!
That means if you for example create a map of Las Vegas but you are in New York ,you wont see a thing.

After your map is working fine on your Tomtom you can delete the files in the "data"folder of Google2ttmaps.

If you need other sources you'll need MOBAC and a program to convert your map data.
With Mobac you can download Nokia OVI maps for a really good road/track coverage even in remote areas.
If you prefer satellite images you can download from the australian Near Map satellite.
Instructions on the how to can be found on their homepage.
You should use Ozi PNG and map files for the download otherwise you'll get in trouble when you convert the maps.

Converting maps with Global Mapper:
Really hard! ;)
I use a Quad Core, 3.2GHz, 8GB Ram and loading a map of Victoria in high detail took almost 4hours.
All up about 64GB data.
Converting took three days!
So you should really think twice before you start some really projects!

Load all you Ozi .map files into GM, depending on the size of the map and your PC this might take a while.
Open the filemenu and use "Export Raster and Elevation data" to save the data as an ECW file.
Copy the file to your map folder in ttmaps and re-index the maps.
After that you should be able to use your map.

I know that might be a bit much and sound to har to do, but once you got used to it, it will be asy and you do it pretty quick.
Keep in mind that ttmaps is a "moving map" application.
That means you have no route navigation like on the TT.
You see your position on the map and the map moves, but you can not navigate to an address.
You can use a "freeAir" navigation that shows you an arrow pointing in the direction of your destination, but you have to check the map for the right tracks to use.
Good on a light plane though!

I downloaded google2ttmaps from your link but it doesn't work properly. When I click on options or about it comes up with a "runtime error '339': Component 'tabctl32.ocx' or one of it's dependencies not correctly registered:a file is missing or invalid".
What does this mean and how do I fix it?
