Navcore, map and speedcam updates

Postby jokskot » Wed Sep 08, 2010 5:25 pm

Quite a lot of subthreads here, I'm afraid, all related to the title.

1. Do members really think it's worthwhile updating speedcams at every new issue i.e. approximately every week?
(the movable ones at road works tend to be out of date when the files are released; permanent ones will change infrequently)

2. If members are happy with their navcon do they see any value in upgrading to the most recently available?

3. Tomtom makes a big marketting play about 15% of roads changing every year. Do members think it worth the hassle to upgrade with every new issue i.e. approximately every three months?

fwiw my personal view would be that every three months for #1, never for #2 and annually for #3 would be about right.

and finally having no doubt irritated one or two...

4. Would it be possible for someone with expertise to indicate what is the natural and logical successor to a given map?
e.g. if I am to upgrade the two W&CE maps shown below, what would be the logical choice for the same geographical area, suiting the specified navcores and of a similar size?
I'm sure lots of people would find this very helpful.

Regards J

1. Cameras are updated with each issue, wether there is cameras in your driving area updated is another thing, it is no real hastle upgrading cams just 2 files to copy across {no patching with updates} so personally i think it is worthwhile

2. It depends what navcore you are currently running, the v9 navcore all have a nicer menu look and status bar to the v8 navcore so this upgrade is a good upgrade providing the device is a widescreen , but the best navcore to use is what suits you best, a navcore not meant for your device might have some problems like auto/day night not working ect. But you also might gain things like speech controll so it is a users choice wether they want a 100% working navcore with old menu look or may have to composite some features for a newer menu look and maybe some new features, but if your device officially has a v9 navcore then there is no need to upgrade to the newest at all as all v9 navcore is generally the same.

3. Yes i think it is worthwhile to upgrade the map at every release, as roads do change, but this again is personall prefrance, it is no real trouble upgrading map if you take some time to read threads/instructions.

4.I am not shure what you mean with this please explain diffrently if possible.

Thanks
djc

Thanks Tendriver and djc for your responses.
Is the equivalence of 855.2938 to 850.2834 documented anywhere other than in Tendriver's reply?
Djc, what I was getting at is a listing - perhaps a tabulation - so that if I have a particular map which I know will probably have been superceded, I can look up what is the latest replacement rather than having to post the question and rely on one of your goodselves to supply that information!
In three months time it would be good to look up what has then superceded 855.2938; similarly someone, in three months time, with 850.2834 could look it up and see the latest update, missing out the 855.xxxx stage.
Are the maps numbers absolutely unique? e.g. are 855.2938 and 850.2834 only applicable to W&CE?

1. Compare the 850 compatibility chart in the 850 map thread with the 855 chart in the 855 thread.
Run TT Home, Add recommended maps. It will tell you the recommended equivilant.
Go to TomTom.com maps for the same info.
2. See answer 1. You are the 1 & only member to ever request this.
3. Normally NO. Ocassionally a "special" map will have it's own unique number.

Thanks Tendriver for your response
re: your statement "You are the 1 & only member to ever request this" I pride myself on being one of the awkward squad :)
So using your suggested approach would indicate that the (or a) successor to W&CE 2GB 850.2820 is W&CE 2GB 855.2931. Would you agree? Perhaps the original sticky has been amended which is why tendriver was only able to write ???.???? in post #3 of this thread.

Thanks in anticipation

The 2 maps 2820 & 2931 are similar, because neither has cspeech, ASR, IQ or ALG, & they can be used with any navcore 7.9XX or higher.Yes you are correct about the ???.????.
