Need GPS/PHONE recommendations ASAP!

I'm sorry for wasting your time tendriver as you've spent a lot of time helping me fix this gps, but I've given up on my tomtom go 520. Its broken as:-

• it can't find satellites
• the battery doesn't charge properly
• the usb charging connector is broken

Instead I'm urgently looking to buy a new tomtom or even a mobile phone which is reliable in GPS and has good battery life. My budget is approx £150 MAX.

I would be most grateful if you can recommend me anything ASAP pls.

Look for the cheapest model you can find that has:

1. At least a 4.3" screen
2. At least 64MB RAM Memory
3. At least a 2GB internal memory
4. A SD card slot
5. Updates with TT Home and not MyTomTom!!

I'm sorry tendriver, the truth is that i don't have a clue. Do i get a phone or should i get a dedicated gps?

There is nothing more annoying than trying to use navigation on a phone while people keep calling and texting you, It's ok for the occasional short journey but all day? I'd get a dedicated unit.

your right fatboyfun, but then i'm not sure what unit to go for....i simply need a sat nav that can take the latest maps. I can pick up another 520 for about £60 - £70, but if i can get a sat nav thats somewhat faster then i'd rather pay a little more.

So wot make/model do you recommend?

Any of the GO models 520/720/920 or 530/630/730/930 are great value for money. Don't worry, they are all pretty fast!

No need to pay more for a newer model. Any of these will do the job just as well and you can use almost any navcore and map you want.

thanks lemoni. The reason i was asking is because after updating to a new navcore, I found my tomtom to be very sluggish. From the mentioned models, which ones have memory? Also what is the difference between a 530 and 730?

I have a 720, which I don't plan on getting rid of anytime soon, & Downunder has a 730. Both of these units meet the requirements in post 2.

The 530 has 1GB internal memory & a different navcore version, which is not an issue.

I'm thinking of getting the 530 for approx £60 or 540 for approx £80 (both are used). They both have 1gb internal memory. Other than that, whats the difference between these two?

The differences between the 2 models are as follows:

The GO 530 has
1) an SD card slot
2) an FM transmitter (to be able to play mp3s stored in the TomTom and hear them, as well as the usual voice guidance and sounds, through the FM tuner on your car stereo)

The latest official navcore for all the x30 models is 8.351

The GO 540 LIVE has
1) a micro-SD card slot,
(no FM transmitter)
2) a built-in SIM card for "live" features such as HD traffic, real time speed camera updates and fuel prices

The latest official navcore for all the x40 LIVE models is 9.058

thanks for the explaination lemoni. When you say "sim-card" is that a mobile phone simcard? How would i use these so-called LIVE features?

1. It's basically the same.
2. Live a paid subscription service.

The reason I've posted it here, is that it might save you time having to explain every spec tomtom to noobs like me, lol. My only issue is that you said the 530 has 1gb memory, but according to wiki, it seems the 520 has the same memory and so does the 730. Also the prices of 530, 540 and 730 are almost the same.

1. What you found is a project that Downunder collaborated on some time ago. What you didn't find is his sticky thread Tomtom model comparison chart in General Dicussion.

2. You asked about the 530 & 730, then the 530 & 540, but no mention of the 520.
