TT Newbie - did I just brick my gps :(

Tue Nov 01, 2011 8:02 pm

I tried updating my maps for my device and ran the the FastActivate.exe program and all 3 buttons after copying the folder & contents (USA_and_Canada_865_3261) to my GPS. I then let the device reboot and am prompted with the message "You cannot use this map on this device: USA_and_Canada". I then came across this forum and saw the help that people were able to get along with newer maps and figured that I'd ask for help before I made things worse. Here's the output from the TTCurrentConfig:

TTGO.BIF:
DeviceName=TomTom XL
DeviceVersionHW=ONE XL (v9)
BootLoaderVersion=55011
ApplicationVersionVersionNumber=8010
ApplicationVersion=9369
CurrentMap=
CurrentMapVersion=0.0
TTGO.BAK:
Not Found...
TTGO.ORI:
Not Found...

Yes, I did at least copy my entire GPS root to a folder on my desktop prior to my attempt at updating my map.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Is there a reason you downloaded a map that is 2 editions out of date?
Did you confirm that the map is patched by looking for a .meta file & a .meta.dct file in the 865 map folder?
Did you remember to patch your navcore?

I managed to put the old maps back on and ran the FastActivate again and it appears that the GPS is working. I ran the TTCurrentConfig again and this is what it's saying now:

TTGO.BIF:
DeviceName=TomTom XL
DeviceVersionHW=ONE XL (v9)
BootLoaderVersion=55011
ApplicationVersionVersionNumber=8010
ApplicationVersion=9369
CurrentMap=USA_and_Canada
CurrentMapVersion=715.1728
TTGO.BAK:
Not Found...
TTGO.ORI:
Not Found...

I'd still like to update my maps as it can't even find my house :(

Yeah, I found that map on a different site, before I found this one and the resources here. What map should I be using for my device and what are my next steps?

thanks in advance.

Considering your home location, do you really want or need Canada coverage?

I just restored my first ever TomTom, an XL330S and it was originally 8.010 the same that shows in your device. After removing all the files from the unit I connected to TT Home and was able to update to 8.083. Then I turned off TT Home and installed United States and Canada 875.3675 (855MB version) through Windows. Next I installed FastActivate.exe and clicked all 4 buttons as instructed. My previously dead GPS that had the wrong files for the unit and missing maps is now working fine.

1. Removing the files wasn't necessary.
2. OK.
3. OK.
4. Well Done, even with the slight mis-step in 1. Congrats!!

When I received the device it did not work and with no map files there was only 331 MB free space which did not leave any room for the smallest map file I could find. I started removing files one by one to free up space. After all where removed my Windows "Properties" tab showed the device was still using over 600 MB of 1 GB. I did the update using TT Home but still only had about 330 MB of free space. Then I decided to format the device which must have wiped out some hidden file because I now had the full 1 GB of free space. Then I proceeded with the restore as I described.

I have my PC set to show hidden files. Do you have any ideas as to why hidden files would accumulate on a device or what they could be? I am curious because this was my first experience with a TomTom.

Thanks

1. That's a fair answer that I can accept.

2. We see this situation maybe once a year, and to date don't have an answer as to why.

Tendriver - not sure if you'll see this or not, but I finally got around to downloading the latest map and patching my Navcore and all is well again. Thanks for your help!
