Please tell me if I'm on the right path to upgrade my GO720

Update

Postby Gweedz » Thu Apr 12, 2012 3:40 pm

I did a fresh re-install. Deleted everything, got TT Home to install 7.480 then 8.300 then 8.351 then finally 9.430.
Copied the 2 files over. Copied the map folder. Ran FA premium (first 2 buttons only).

Glad to say it seems to have fixed my major issues:
All the "lefts and rights" were correct.
My quick menu works again!

But now I have these issues/questions LOL:
1. Refer to the attached photo. After reaching my destination (this happened every time (4 times so far)) it still shows remaining time and distance. In the photo I dropped someone off (at destination), and backtracked over my previous route - you can still see it on the screen. I was about 3 km from the original destination, not 80m as shown on the screen. There was no voice guidance, or "recalculating" message. Also doesn't show the street name at top of screen, nor show distance to next turn (bottom right), it makes me believe it's not actually routing me anywhere - it just forgot to clear the screen. LOL I let this go for about 20km, until I canceled the route from the menu, all is fine. Until I reach next destination and once again it doesn't automatically cancel.

2. My maximum speed limit used to be in a nice little graphic in a white box similar to the road signs. Now it's not. Weird.

3. What is that triangle to the left of my current speed? I don't remember seeing it before.

4. When installing files, what is the difference between:
a. NOT copying the ttsystem/model.txt files, yet using the first 3 buttons on FA
AND
b. Copying only the ttsystem file (not the model.txt file) and using only the first 2 buttons on FA
In other words, does the 3rd button on FA premium do the exact same as overwriting the ttsystem file?

5. Before reloading everything I made a backup. Any way to restore my old favorites and map updates?

6. I noticed it still shows the wrong street exit from the highway during my commute. Can you see if yours does the same?
Navigate from: Canada, Ontario, Maple, intersection Rutherford Rd and Jane St.
To: Vaughan (maybe called Woodbridge), intersection Hwy 7 and Weston Rd.
I estimate 4km, the majority driving SB on Hwy 400. Between Rutherford Rd and Hwy 7 there are no exits. Langstaff is midway between those roads, but you cannot exit. At first my GPS says everything correctly - it shows Exit 29 at top (or whatever the number, but it is correct). Then shows Hwy 7 (correct). Then as you approach it changes to Langstaff. And the voice even says "Exit via Langstaff". Well Langstaff rd was about 1 km back, and it doesn't have an exit. I'm just curious if yours shows the same thing. This is probably in the top 10 of most busy hwy exits in Ontario and it's strange that it's incorrect. Attached is a photo of the area in question.

Thanks!

1. Once you reach your planned destination, the route becomes inactive and TT will not give any additional guidance of any sort.
2. It should be in the same box as the Triangle, that doesn't do anything.
3. See point 2.
4. See post 5, point 4.
5. Copy the mapsettings.cfg file from your backup.
6. Yep I got the same as you. "Exit via Langstaff". It's a map error. Report it here: [Please Register or Login to download file]

1. I agree, but it's still showing remaining time and distance to destination, plus the red routing and arrows on the map of the route I just took. It appears to be only partially inactive. When I cancel the route all that goes away, as expected.
2/3 Not sure I understand. The speed limit (60 Max) used to be in a white box that looks like a road sign. I don't care, I'm just wondering if something went wrong again. Maybe I'll get it when I install the safety camera POIs or play around in the settings.
4. Thank you.
5. Thanks again.
6. And once again thanks for taking the time to verify that. I'll report it to give my share back to TT :)

Maybe we aren't referring to the same thing.

Maximum speed displays in the right blue box.
"Warn when driving faster than allowed" + "Warn when driving faster than a set speed" display in the left hand blue box.

OK I figured out the mystery of the missing white box. Basically I had display set to "show current time". When this is done there is no physical space to show the box, so I unchecked "show current time" and the box came back. I have my display set to vertical - not sure if it works the same as in horizontal.
Still haven't figured out the purpose of the triangle to the left of my current speed.
If I can't get the unit to actually end routing when I reach my final destination I may have to re-install everything. It's annoying to see it displaying useless, misleading information when it shouldn't.
Eventually I'll figure something out - the fun part is tinkering with it!

1. With "show current time" checked, Max speed is displayed under the time, rather than in the white box that takes up space & blocks the display of other items.
2. This was answered in post 32 point 2.

1. Correct. I have no use for "current time" since it's already on my radio. The space the white box takes up will be wasted by the blue box anyway (which blocks map display), so at least this way the max speed is more visible. Again, I'm in vertical display, not sure if it works differently in horizontal display.
2. I didn't understand your reply: "It should be in the same box as the Triangle, that doesn't do anything".
3. Can you recommend a traffic receiver for use in Canada? I see online some people say get the one that replaces the power cord and has the "egg" on the wire, and others say the one with the long wire and suction cups. I'm looking for one that provides free lifetime traffic through RDS. Thanks.
4. Trying to figure out FM Transmitter. Both with previous install and current one I've had same issue. In the speaker preference section it allows me to select the frequency, and I did get it to play the tone through my car radio/speakers. But when I try to select the speaker it only give the following 3 options: Internal, Bluetooth, Line-out. According to the manual it should show a fourth - FM to car radio. I don't have this option and can't see in the manual where to "activate" it. Any suggestions?

1. Whatever!! I'm sure you are aware that the vertical display takes up more map space than the horizontal!!
2. You stated, "My maximum speed limit used to be in a nice little graphic in a white box similar to the road signs. Now it's not. Weird.
You asked, "What is that triangle to the left of my current speed? I don't remember seeing it before."
I addressed both of these with, "It should be in the same box as the Triangle, that doesn't do anything."
3. Go with the "egg".
4. Change the model.txt file to X40.

1. I agree it takes up more space, but for me it's more important to see what's ahead and not what's beside me.
2. I reset to factory default and the triangle went away. But now my quick menu doesn't work anymore :( It works with display horizontal, but when in vertical mode the quick menu button acts as a volume button.
3. Thank you.
4. OK thanks. Are X50 and X40 the only two options I can put here, or are there others I can use to experiment with?
5. Remember the incorrect road name you verified on your unit, and suggested to tell TomTom? I did and here's their reply:
Thanks! We were able to use your input to improve our maps. This update will go out in our next release of our map database. This report is now closed. Good suggestion!

UPDATE:
Because of all the bugs I'm encountering with this installation I reverted back to my original backup of unpatched 8.351 + old map. I'm going to experiment with latest navcore on this map before patching.

Stay tuned... LOL

The bugs are not device, navcore or map related!!

What are they related to? Installation?

No. They are related to tinkering with very little basic TT system knowledge.

Do I need advanced TT system knowledge in order to set my home location or plan a route? What about changing preferences in the menus? That's all the tinkering I did with the previous install (besides patching the system).

And after doing the above, no matter how many different ways I press the quick menu arrow it always opens the volume control. No matter how many different ways I drive to my destination, the system always screws up when I reach it. Is it really that fragile? I do remember yelling at it once - maybe I hurt its feelings LOL

I'll try installing a third time and see if I get yet a third set of issues. I'm not worried though because I'm sure eventually it'll sort itself out. :)

No, the basics need to be mastered first. 44 posts in 11 days & you still are having issues with the current official navcore for your device should tell you something.
