Received TT 720

Tue May 24, 2011 8:50 am

hi guys,

Today i've received the TT 720. I put it on, but the battery quickly died on me, but i managed to get these details off it:-

Device AxxxL AxxxS
App 8.392 (1909/091109) OS:342099
64mb ram (free: 11.4mb)
GPS v1.20, Boot 5.5120
Map: 'Western Europe' v715.1703
Lang: Eng UK

I hope i don't end up having a TT which has a faulty battery

I thought you bought a 730. If the battery is bad & that is the only issue, contact the seller. Since he has a 100% positive rating on 2000 transactions, I would think that he would be willing to work with you.
BTW, I replaced the battery in my 720 a month ago.

hi mate,

thanks for your brilliant advice. the seller was extremely helpful and offered a £10 refund or the choice of sending the tomtom back. Since its pretty cheap, i decided to keep it and use the £10 towards another battery. What battery do i need for this 720..can you recommend where i can buy from? Also how can i update it...maybe just the maps, postcode and cameras if possible?

Batteries can be found cheap on Ebay and the tutorial on how to replace it in the tutorial section ;)
You can use almost any V9 Navcore you can find in the Navcore thread, the 720 is very compatible.
I use the 9.004 on my 730 (similar hardware) and as far as I recall Tendriver uses the 9.205 on his 720.
Postcodes can found in the map thread and speedcams in several threads, depending if you prefer the TT or third party files.

The battery after charging can last approx 20-30mins, so my question is that since i only use the tomtom on the odd occasion and don't want to start opening it and lets assume the battery in worst situation has no charge at all, can the tomtom run just on the power of a cigerette lighter/usb power?

Which navcore is the most memory efficient with good amount of features (bluetooth, mobile phone etc)? The reason i ask this is because the last navcore was very sluggish on the 520.

Also I have a different question. I got points on my licence for using mobile phone whilst driving :naughty:. I tried to use this tt for bluetooth handsfree, but even after switching on the fm transmitter, whenever i talked, the sound of the person came out of the tomtom internal speaker and not the car speakers...is there anyway around this?

ttnewbie, you have brought up some very good, interesting questions!

1) Your TomTom will still work even if you remove the battery. The power from the cigarette charger will run it, no problem.

2) It's a matter of taste which navcore is best, as the GO 720 will run almost any navcore, but will run some better than others. You could try the two navcores 9.004 & 9.205 already mentioned here by Downunder. I've tried the 9.004 and found it very reliable. Try them all out and see which one you prefer. Just make sure all functions, especially bluetooth and FM transmitter, are working reliably. At the moment I'm using the latest official navcore 8.351 for my GO 730 and all the functions are working well, which is to be expected with an offical navcore.

3) No, you can't have the handsfree phone calls running through the FM transmitter. I wish that was possible too!

thanks very much lemoni for your help.

So now the battery problem is solved, my next questions are:-

1. Is the method of updating the 720 same as 520? i.e use the same navcore and map versions? Can't i just update my maps using my current navcore?

2. Is there absolutely no way of outputting an incoming call to car speakers? I thought the Tomtom also has an audio jack, allowing you to output sounds straight to car speakers?

1. they are basically the same model and compatible. The 8.392 is outdated.
2. No, all hands free stuff goes over the internal speaker.
However you can try dfferent Navcores and check the line out, I never tried it.

i'm sure a good while ago i managed to output the sound to the car speakers on my old tomtom...maybe they disabled the feature with their new navcores.

WOW! That was a huge crash...i missed this site for the last 2 days. Its still very slow.

ok, i managed to fix the tomtom problem, by updating instead to navcore 9.051 and maps 870.3406. The only problem i now have is that the gps takes a lot lot long to find satellites and once found, if i do any street turn, it will take a good 5-10 seconds of delay to show on the map. Is there some GPS fix for this?

Check the free Ram first and disable unused POI#s on the map.
I suspect your device is running on it's limits.
If less than 12mb free try a hard reset followed by the TT clear flash tool.

thanks downunder35m mate.

Before i saw your reply, i checked how much ram i had and it was 24mb out of 64mb free. I decided to ditch the navcore and go for the official navcore which is now on 8.398 (with a gps fix update from TT Home) which has now 15.7mb ram free. I also switched off ALL POIs, but it still does the same thing.

The only thing left is to try the clear flash tool. I will try this and let you know how i get on...thanks!

Mon May 30, 2011 12:04 pm

i got the TT clear flash tool from the uk site. I don't know if its even worked as it happens so quickly. I though the clearflash tool wipes out everything, doesn't it? If so, then how come all my stuff is still on there?

Also all i notice is that as soon as i click ok, the installation begins and ends within a second or two and says "installation complete"...the TT reboots and everything still looks the same...is this normal or am i doing something wrong?

Tue May 31, 2011 1:33 am

The clear flash tool only deletes unused "rubbish" in the permanent memory.
So your data is always save ;)
There should be no problem at all when using a 720, and since you already changed the Navcore I can only suspect the map but I never heard of a map causing your problems.
For the sat fix : even with current data from Home it can take a while to get a full lock.
If I have not used my TT for a few days I have to wait somtimes over 3minutes to get the first complete lock on my position.
After that it is all fine and the next morning it is only a matter of seconds.

8.351 is the current Official Standard Navcore for your unit. 8.398 is the current TRUCK Navcore for your unit.
