Schizophrenic Tomtom in Cyprus

Schizophrenic Tomtom in Cyprus

Postby jokskot » Sat Apr 27, 2013 11:50 am

While I recognise that most of this forum is about the technicalities of updating Sat Navs rather than their use, I thought people might be interested in my recent Tomtom experience in Cyprus.

First of all let me point out that although it's not clear from the pictogram in the 905 series new maps, the Europe map (see my signature) includes Cyprus (or at least 70% of it, according to the Tomtom web site. So far as I can tell this means all the tarred roads and many of the dirt roads in the Republic)

The schizophenia sets in when you set your destination and move off and you are warned (if you have the safety option selected) to drive on the right - Cyprus drives on the left!
Subsequently the small "advance info."pictograms at the lower left of the screen shown when approaching a roundabout show the route being counter-clockwise whereas it should be clockwise.

The spoken instructions didn't seem to be consistent- on occasions "turn left at the roundabout, third exit" (it should have been first), but "turn right at the roundabout, third exit" (correct, but for consistency it should have indicated first exit). There was also one roundabout where it indicated "turn right at the roundabout, third exit" (whereas what was required was left at the first!
I should point out that the changing indicated route through these roundabouts was always correct.

While I'm not sure whether the behaviour is characteristic only of my Navcore and this map, others may wish to report their observations of incorrect instructions in Cyprus or elsewhere.

I recognise that there's nothing that Navitotal.com can do about this, but I can hardly advise the Tomtom company directly that a map I downloaded through this site, rather than bought from them, malfunctions!

Otherwise the Cyprus map was superb and almost essential if you want to drive off the main roads between the main centres.

Are you referring to Main Menu, Changes preferences, Safety preferences, Driving on the left or right, Warn me on which side of the road to drive: "When in countries that drive on the LEFT"??

As a Brit normally driving on the left, I have it set to warn me when starting driving in other European countries, which drive on the right. I get no message when driving in UK or Ireland. Similarly there should be no message in Cyprus which also drives on the left due to its colonial past. Instead I got an erroneous message telling me to drive on the right.

1. As long as you have it set to warn you when starting driving in other European countries, which drive on the right, it will never warn you to drive on the LEFT in Cyprus.
2. Because GB is your "home location", therefore you don't need to be warned.
3. Did you test it by changing your preference to "When in countries that drive on the LEFT"?? If not, then your claim of an erroneous message in not valid!!

Thanks for your comments Tendriver but you seem to have misunderstood me............

To clarify...

1.I have it set to warn me in countries which drive on the right. I didn't expect it to warn me to drive on the left in Cyprus. But it certainly should not have told me to drive on the RIGHT which is incorrect. It has not warned me to drive on the right in Ireland, another independent country which dives on the left, nor should it.

2.I don't have GB set as my home location I only ask for warning when driving in a place/country which drives on the right. It has operated correctly in every country other than Cyprus I have visited.

3. I didn't test with the "Warn........LEFT"; As it told me to drive on the RIGHT in a country which drives on the LEFT this is certainly erroneous.

There are also the roundabout direction errors which I detailed in my opening post.

I tried to replicate it with my AU map - no chance.
No matter to what I set my TT, the roundabouts are correct and no warnings.
TT claims on their support forum the Cyprus map is include in Greece and some EU maps, maybe you can try a different map to confirm?
At this stage and assuming your device settings are correct, I tend to say there might be a map problem.
On the other side you won't find any problems like that on the TT support, which is where you should have asked too.

Thanks for your response...

No surprise! I wouldn't expect there to be any problem for OZ

I suspect that it is treating Cyprus like Greece wrt to the side of the road to drive on. Probably just needs a switch to occur in the code when the country is selected.
Unfortunately now back home..if you'd like to contribute I'll happily return to Cyprus to test ;-)

Agree a direct question to Tomtom would probably clarify, but see my point in the original post. TT will almost certainly see this correspondence anyway and will likely investigate and modify the map. My original post was really about sharing anomalous behaviour and wondering if anyone else had experienced similar behaviour in either Cyprus or elsewhere.
It would be interesting if anyone who has used Tomtom (perhaps with other maps or NCs) in Cyprus could indicate if their combinations have worked properly.

A further thought on this...

Could anyone interested in this behaviour, with a map on their device which includes Cyprus, set it to warn them which side of the road to drive on when in countries that drive on the RIGHT (through Safety preferences) and then try a "virtual drive" from, say, Lemesos to Pafos (Paphos) using Itinerary Planning followed by View Route> Show Route Demo?

Do you get the warnings and the roundabout inconsistency that I have highlighted? What map? What navcore?

Mean while I am downloading Eastern Europe to see if that map behaves the same as Europe/

Test Demos were conducted using NC 9.465 & Greece 905.4754.

Test Demo 1. Lomesos to Pafos. "Warn me on which side of the road to drive:" set to "Never". No warning received. Demo used the left lane & clockwise around the roundabouts.
Test Demo 2. Lomesos to Pafos. "Warn me on which side of the road to drive:" set to "When in countries that drive on the RIGHT". No warning received. Demo used the left lane & clockwise around the roundabouts.
Test Demo 3. Lomesos to Pafos. "Warn me on which side of the road to drive:" set to "When in countries that drive on the LEFT". WARNING "Driving lane warning: Drive on the left-hand side of the road" received. Demo used the left lane & clockwise around the roundabouts.

Thanks for checking this out Tendriver. Clearly no problems with your hardware and software.

As I indicated, as an intention, in an earlier post. I downloaded Europe East 905.4757. (This is the only other "free" 905 series map I could find which includes Cyprus and is compatible with the navcore on my smartphone. A "virtual drive" to Pafos was exactly the same as obtained with the the map shown in my signature.....

"Warn me on which side of the road to drive:" set to "When in countries that drive on the RIGHT". Warning to drive on the RIGHT received. Demo used the left lane but advance action icon showed counterclockwise through roundabouts & gave the wrong indications at two roundabouts (first showed right turn , second straight ahead) but the "drive" actually followed the the correct route which was clockwise and left at the first and clockwise and right (3rd exit) at the second!!

I have also run the same demo with the same settings on my daughter's Tomtom 510 (Europe East 905.4757 navcore 7.903) and got identical results. This is a link to a video of the "virtual drive": [Please Register or Login to download file]

What are the settings in the TT's?
Just asking as I got curious and tried it too but for me it was all correct.
That is two mods that can confirm it works as expected.
Not sure how one could mess it up so that the TT get's a map wrong, but who knows...

I failed to mention that the "advanced action icon" showed clockwise through the roundabouts.

What settings that I haven't already provided would you like to know?

But I don't think either of you have used the same maps(s) and Navcores as I have!

Then you should test the same maps and Navcores that we have!

With the greatest respect, I don't think this a very useful comments as I can run neither "your" navcore nor "your" map on my device.

For interest I have now done the same"virtual drive" to Pafos, as I posted on You tube, on an Android phone using Navcore
v 1.0(1072278) and 895.4453 Europe map which was exactly as expected...

No drive on the RIGHT instruction, left hand lane, roundabout advance warnings clockwise and it correctly says turn left at the first roundabout and right at the second.

It seems that the problem is with either the rather old navcore (but current) on my smartphone and GO510 or the maps or the interface between them.
