1. I'm not talking about a tut, i'm referring to the instructions in post 2 above, that were written for your needs.
2. Copy everything from the XL's internal memory to the card, except the UK map. Copy the US map to the card & patch it just like you did with the uk 915.5106 map. Done.

How will I be able to check the USA maps are working before I get to america?

And as i'll then have the UK maps on the internal tomtom memory and the USA maps on the 2gb memory card inserted, how do I choose which maps to run when I turn tomtom on?

A. A XL can't use the internal & external memories at the same time. The card is the default navcore & map, when it is installed.
You have 2 options for choosing which map to run.
1. Insert the card to run the US map. Remove the card to run the UK map.
2. Put the UK & the US maps on the card. Choose the map by going to Main Menu, Change Preferences, Switch Map.

B. Main Menu, Prepare route, Depart from: Point on map.
