Stuttering

Mon Jun 19, 2017 3:52 pm

Hi,

Has anyone been having problems with TomTom stuttering?

A few occasions I have noticed navigation directions given by TomTom have been stuttering, not every occasion, just a few times. Is it normal, or is mine playing silly buggers?

Cheers

It depend on the internal memory 32 or 64MB ram and the use from the original navcore. Then in principal it not stutterd.

Hi,

Thanks for that info. I think my device has 64MB Ram. I could double check to find out. It does have the original navcore, but still has the occasional stuttering when pronouncing directions, only stuttered as in giving 3 or 4 repeats of a bunch of words this morning, buggered if I know what would be the cause, bit comical at times.

It's happened again last night.

Has anyone else had this happen or is it only my device that's experiencing it?

Are you using a computer voice (LoquendoTTS) or just a standard one?

Hi frederf,

Good question. Not sure if its standard; Where abouts in the device can I find out?

Hi mate,

In the voices menu, a standard voice will just be named 'Sheila' whereas a LoquendoTTS voice will be titled 'Kate (Computer Voice)'

A standard voice sounds more natural & announces the usual turn left, right, you've reached your destination etc.
A computer voice sounds more computer-ish but uses a file within the map to announce more information like the actual street name, road numbers, distance to next services etc.

I assume your XXL IQ Routes (64MB RAM) is just using a standard voice so it shouldn't be stuttering unless it's running out of available RAM which we suspect is what's happening.
In this case, check that you don't have too many POI's permanently turned on which will eat up your RAM. Only turn a POI on if you actually need it...like airports/hotels/ferrys for EG.

As we both know, Australia does have some strange names of places like 'Naringalingalook' which the computer voice (and me) can struggle with at times...but that's a separate issue.

Hi,
I'll peruse and check it in next few days and will get back to you.

In relation to POI, is there a box that one needs to uncheck. As far as I know of I don't recall switching on POI unless it does so automatically.

Go to Preferences > Show POI on Map...and uncheck all boxes that may be ticked, then test it out to see if the problem persists.

Ok, I'll check sometime today (Sunday 30th July) and let you know how it went.

My XXL 64mb always stutters within the first 800 meters after leaving home.
It sometimes happens elsewhere. I wouldn't worry about it.

I disabled the POI's still stutters, so I've re-enabled POI's. Not that worried about the stuttering , just curious as to why it has and whether it could be cured so to speak.

Good to know I'm not the only person experiencing the issue, thought it might have been something gone astray with my device.
Cheers
