Something I want to share with all those who have TomTom navigation. I owned two right nav. GO700 and suddenly they both stopped to work with a sharp odor that spread from the interior thereof. When I opened them both visibly blown the same part. A few days ago I bought a Tom Tom One and instructive experience of a few months ago I put an adapter for the car into place and digital instrument checked +5 VDC, which was correct. I joined navigate and very quickly I felt the same smell from the navigation, I quickly ruled out but it was too late, again there has been a failure. Then I decided to find what the problem was and I found but unfortunately too late. Car Charger + 5VDC power supply shows correctly but at moments it outputs appears mah. output voltage is + 12VDC. The cause is a fine white wire that the output connector returns information about the correct power. I did this so I decided on the plate charger shorted white and red wire. All that navigation stops working verifying a car charger. I hope that this one will help. And finally, happy new year to all.

With a good car charger that won't happen as they keep the voltage low.
But chinaware is known to be cheap by leaving vital components out.

Unfortunately today it is made in China and charger came complete with navigation and does not look like China.

If it is a genuine Tomtom charger I highly doubt it would cause such problems.
And "does not look like" means nothing these days, what is inside counts!
A Apple charger as a genuine product has about 30 more electronic parts in it than the similar looking china fake
