Tom Tom XL 30 1GB lost maps

Postby alexvanwyk » Sun Apr 07, 2024 6:59 pm

Good day.

I have a 14 year old Tom Tom XL that I dug out of a drawer. I wanted to start using it again since the car Satnav packed up.
I loaded the Tom Tom Home app to my computer and told it to update the device.
It stops after downloading the South africa map and says its attempting to copy temp.tlv to device internal memory, and then says the item was not valid after installations and bombs out.

I found the downloaded .zip file, but its 1 meg big and will not unzip, because the folder is empty.
on top of that the device now says no maps are loaded and will do nothing more.

I have copied all the files from the device to the computer and there is 849MB memory available.
I went looking for a backup folder, which is there, but also only 1 meg big.

what are my options? do I have a fancy paperweight or can it be rescued?

7 simple steps to update your device with the latest map

To update your device with the latest map, follow these simple steps:

1) VERY IMPORTANT: Connect your device to your computer via USB. Using Windows Explorer, open your TomTom drive and backup the complete contents of your TomTom.

2) Check your navcore version. You can do this either on the device menu under Version Info, or you can check the navcore version in TomTom Home when the device is connected to your computer, or by opening the ttgo.bif file with notepad.
Try to find Navcore 9.510, which work on most devices, it's always possible to install another

3) Check which map is compatible with your navcore using the latest compatibility, found on most forums

4) Get the map which fits you best and which also fits on your device
Delete the old map folder

5) Extract the map using WinRaR or similar.
Copy across the new map folder into the root of the device.
Make sure when you open the map folder it only contains the map files, not another folder within a folder.

6) Download the latest version of FastActivate from the FastActivate thread:
Extract the file and copy across FastActivate.exe to the TomTom drive (the root of the device).

7) Run FastActivate.exe from the TomTom drive, clicking on the first 3 options in order, waiting for each to complete:
Update meta, patch maps, patch navcore.

Get what you need from ftp://GPSURL_Private_Users_20180101:GPS ... net:47474/

Start with navcore 9.510

P.S.
You need to install WinSCP

P.P.S.

The latest maps you'll find them here ftp://All_Available_Maps:All_Available_ ... net:47475/

I am sorry for being frustrating.

How do I open the ftp links? The computer tells me I need to select an app to open the link and then gives me a list with nothing in it.

I am a computer caveman.

You need to install WinSCP and connect it to your browser, for example Google Chrome
Once installed WinSCP and you click on the url a popup will ask if WinSCP must be used to get connected with my server.

By the way, I'm the Caveman here, not you

OK!!!!!
Thanks, your links worked beautifully.

I have the files for Navcore 9.510

They are .rar files.
I have a couple of southern africa maps, I will see what works when i get to that stage.

Now what?

I have copied all the files on the device to the computer. Do I delete them off the device? And how do I load your files to the device?

And you talk about the FastActivate.exe in your tutorial. Where do I find that?

Baby steps.

It is best to place everything in one place on your PC and make the necessary adjustments there.
Make sure that a meta code is also available for the maps you are going to use, otherwise you will have to fall back on an older map.
Once everything has been patched, you can restore all files to the device via USB.
The Navcore you got from my server already has a patch.

If you run out of space, you can possibly make the map smaller by, for example, deleting the cspeeech files if they are there. You can also delete POI files, but then you will lose some information.

Fredderf thanks for the link to Fastactivate, that and a few others are also on my server, perhaps a bit unfortunately hidden, I will soon put everything separately, so as few subfolders as possible.

When using Fastactivate, please note that you use option #1 for each patch so that the latest meta codes are always available. My last experience was that the patch did not always work.

By the way, everything from Fastactivate also comes from my server, but I haven't seen P3dro, who owns the tool, for more than a year now.

Good luck,

Further to what pe1agp said above...do a full backup in Windows Explorer before you proceed

Also, you'll find Poteo_Roke's document very useful:
