The document is about a forensic analysis of a TT , to recover data form your travels.
The internal structure of the device is explained... a simple google translate follows

INTRODUCTION
The first satellite navigation systems for military purposes are born on U.S. Polaris submarines, in order
to detect their position. Over the years, the technology of satellites has
developed and disseminated to the point of being present on the majority of vehicles in circulation.
TomTom GPS Navigation Device born to the automotive user, uses
connection to the global navigation satellite system (GNSS) NAVSTAR Global Positioning
System (GPS) (USA), consisting of 32 satellites in MEO orbit of six different orbital planes.

[ SEE IMAGE ]
TomTom uses a computer inside the device with ARM processor created by
Samsung, which runs through a Linux system; the operation of the software, depending
the device may be located on an SD card to internal memory.
A 'boot loader' in computer searches data
map you are using in the internal memory or SD card software .
It then transfers the software to 64 MB internal RAM and starts the
software.
The hardware start the GPS and the navigation application.
The navigation application then reads all installed options, such as voice perfectly, and the last chosen route.

The module ensures that the GPS satellite signal is translated into coordinates that identify
the exact location on the map. After startup, the GPS receiver calculates the position based on
signals from the nearest satellite, which processes the position by calculating the distance from at least four
different satellites, which send information such as their identity, altitude, location in relation
with other satellites, etc..

On newer models there is also RDS-TMC ("Radio Data System-Traffic
Message Channel ") (system for transmission over radio channel for traffic messages).
It is a
service that communicates real-time traffic information to the navigation device
through a special receiver. The service provider encodes the message and sends it to the transmitters
FM radio, which transmit it as a signal RDS (Radio Data System) within the normal
FM radio broadcasts. The TMC decods the message and TomTom
shows a visual message or voice communication.

This work focuses on finding a forensic procedure on devices
TomTom GPS Navigation, on which it is possible to find extremely useful information for
investigation. In fact, the address information stored, the routes constructed, the point
"Base" points of interest, etc.., Allow us to reconstruct the movements, the
favorite routes, more frequent travel destinations of the user of the device.

Ok, what of this id new, interesting or not true for any other GPS system on market?
If you store your Home location and favourite places in your GPS anyone can find it - no secrets there, same for routes and recently used addresses.

Well.. here in Europe this March a strange case happened in Holland: It was discovered that TT was selling the data of all the travels of their clients to the Police, With the relative instant speed and travel of them.
The fact was publsced by many newspaper, also here in Italy
The data were antonymous in some way, id est it was possible for the police to follow each journey, discover where the speed limit was surpassed, so to place the speed device to better catch the drivers.
It was not possible to the Police to use the data and send a fee for the past speed surpassing.

This happened because when you link with TTHOME it can read the device and pull out all the telemetry data stored in the device.

The forensic article is about this, as a proof in a trial.
