Tom Tom XXL

Postby bondy99 » Tue Aug 06, 2013 1:32 pm

Hello,

I have a Tom Tom XXL GPS device and would like to get it updated.

It's 2 years old.

Does anyone know which current Tom Tom map for Australia I should obtain?

I may require other items such as speedcams, voice, plus whatever else might be required.

Any assistance on this would be most welcome.

Cheers, Bondy99

1. 9.510 is the current navcore for your XXL. Australia_910_4892 [155MB] is the current usable map.
2. TomTom Official Speedcams 02.08.2013

Many Thanks for your help.

I had a quick glance on the System Info on that Tom Tom XXL. It's apparently Tom Tom Home Ov2 Ver. File

Australia-386.met 20-10-2011
Australia - PNA File 20-10-2011.

That's about all I know about it. I copied the contents from the original Tom Tom XXL GPS Device onto a MicroSD Card to see if it will work on MobileNavigator GPS, but cant get it to load up. I have changed it to run directly from the SDCard. It does not seem to work for reasons unknown.

The original Tom Tom XXL device has only internal memory and no provision for SDCard. Hence the updates and trying to work in on another device.

Do I need the original Tom Tm XXL device or will this run on a generic GPS Device?

Cheers, Bondy99

I would have assumed it would work, maybe I have not done it correctly.

A generic mobilenavigator GPS device runs Windows ce, the TomTom device runs Linux, so what you're doing will not work.

It does not matter how big or small the internal memory is, there always more than enough room for the AU map.
The smallest devices offer at least 1GB internal - so why again do you need to get TT workig on a crappy CE device?? ;)

@Fatboyfun,

Thanks for informing me. Is there any way of completely erasing the internal OS of that GPS and install a Linux OS?

If not possible, how would I go about to see if the new maps and speedcam I have just downloaded for Tom Tom XXL will work?

Cheers,

@Downunder35.

I promised an old farmer I would try to get his Tom Tom GPS updated with new maps etc...it's over 2 years old when it was purchased by him. Obviously I have only been advised that Tom Tom runs on Linux OS. Hence wont work on WinCE OS

The old bloke wont relinquish his Tom Tom unit for me to work directly on. He needs the device at all times and does not want to part with it. It's the way how it is.

Cheers

Than do it the fast way ;)
Download the current 910.4892 AU map, the 9.510 Navcore .cab file from the Navcore section and FastActivate.
This completes the current versions you need for a complete update.
Unpack the Navcore to a SD card or USB stick,
add the downloaded map, make sure to unpack the map FILES! into a folder - you don't want the map files in another sub folder,
unpack FastActivate into the root and you are ready.

Once you have the device to play with:
Make a full backup using Windows Explorer,
Delete all from the device except:
ttgo.bif
the folders "voices", "LoquendoTTS"
and personal stuff like MP3's or videos if existing
Now copy the content of your prepared USB stick to the TT and when done start FastActivate (the one located on the TT) to patch Navcore and map.
In case the old bloke still needs his favorites copy the file "mapsettings.cfg" from the old map folder (backup! ;) ) into the new map folder on the TT.

There is no way to convert a wince device to Linux to run TomTom.
You might be able to run the Windows version of TomTom navigator, but it's so old now it's not recommended.

@ Fatboyfun.

Hmmm, that does make things a bit difficult then. I would have thought there might have been a workaround by deleting and reformatting the GPS device, being a FAT32 then install Linux OS from scratch.

I might have to search for an old Tom Tom XXL that has Linux OS already installed.

The wince core is flashed into a rom chip, it's not a case of formatting it and installing Linux, besides TomTom use a proprietary Linux build.

@ Fatboyfun,

Oh ok, that explains the problem. Looks like I'll have to find another cheap Tom Tom device on ebay, at least I managed to get the latest maps for the old farmer.
