TomTom Go old skool can it be updated?

tom tom is booting but it just gets stuck on the green screen telling me to remove the memory stick... in the maps folder there is a meta file but no meta.dct file! so im pretty confused as to what i need to get it away now to be honest... guess i need to find an original folder set from somewhere!

If you use a SD card you need at least a copy of the ttgo.bif in the root and a complete map folder with a valid .dct file in it.
Also you will need a correctly installed Navcore, the message to remove the SD indicates that the Navcore is not correctly installed or missing at all.

I have pressed the reset button in for 30 seconds and then turned it on, the screen comes up with the specifications, under bootloader it just says 4.29 there are no other references of bootloader that I can see.

Imho the best way is to update the bootloader and try the new Navcore again.

Ok I have tried searching for the 5.5112 but reading other threads it appears I have to wait for you guys to advise me of where to go to download another navcore that has the bootloader I need, so not to brick my device. I will wait..........:D

Check the downloaded archive(s) for a file named system - it might be renamed with the added version number.
If so you can rename it by cutting off the version number from filename.
After a start with the new bootloader on the SD it will be installed and the new Navcore should work just fine.

Please find attached the 5.5112 bootloader.

Unpack to the root of your device and reboot.
After that you will have full support for V8 Navcores and SDHC cards.
Install the 8.412 Navcore as before and start the device to generate the ttgo.bif if not already present.
Add the map and use FastActivate to get it going.
Keep in mind that you can not computer voices with that device and that you should delete the LoquendoTTS folder if present.

Is there a way I can install it from the SD or do I have to specifically connect it to the PC the reason I say this is because I have a power issue with it and it does not hold charge.

If that is the interna memory or a SD makes no difference as long as the device can boot from it.
But in any case you need to have a working power supply as there is no point in doing that on an empty battery.

I have updated the boot loader with the link given (thanks) and it all loads up just fine thank you for the bootloader. Which is the most up to date UK map that will work on this unit. At the moment I am using 870.3406. Also does this unit support TTS voices?

Simply use FastActivate, patch the Navcore and activate the map - after that all should be working fine.

Ok I have added voices and they are working fine, one last hurdle, I have installed premium cameras and have patched them however, when I go to tomtom services they are greyed out, how do I get them to work? do I have to alter the switchfile txt in order for the device to recognize tom tom services?

grrrrrrrrrr i still cant get this thing working, i cant find the .meta.dct file in my map folder anywhere United_kingdom_and_Republic_of_Ireland_870.3406 it has a .meta of the same name inside the folder but no dct!

is there anything special for the bootloader i need to do other than download, extract and place into the root of the SD card?

im then running se_navcore8.412.1236_32mb

then extracting my map and running that self installer then running autoactivate/fastactivate... i still just get asked to insert the SD when i switch the sat nav on

i made my own dct file by copy and pasting the ,=meta file and renaming it...

the device booted past the start up, loaded the map (scroll bar along the bottom) and got to the green tom tom screen then froze, i rebooted and it now doesnt recognise the card again!


im now trying to connect via tomtom home to reinstall the software and the device isnt picked up on the computer, this is down to whatever is on the card... i really need help!

is it not possible to completely wipe the card and start from scratch again?

First of all, you don't need to start again from scratch, as you've already done most of the hard work!

1) If there is no .meta.dct file in the map folder, then it means you didn't patch your map. VERY IMPORTANT: Download the latest version of FastActivate Premium (version 1.8.7.1), run it from the root of the SD card, you must click on Maps/Voices/Speedcams and wait until it completes patching the map. Then check your map folder to confirm there is a .meta.dct file before continuing any further.

2) You don't need to do anything else with the bootloader, other than place it in the root of the SD card and rename it to "system" (which you seem to have already done, as stated earlier).

3) Do not wipe your SD card and don't connect to Home just to install the software (i.e. the navcore), because you will only get the official navcore from Home and you won't be able to use the full featured 870.3406 map.

I have installed premium cameras and have patched them with the up to date activator however, when I go to tomtom services they are greyed out, how do I get them to work?

I have just sent you step by step instructions, the member above me is correct, you need to use the latest automatic activator as the one supplied with the navcore does not work (at least not for me)

I must add that these instructions are what I have done to get my TomTom Go classic updated and working as it should, consult moderators if not sure

2. Not necessary. Each navcore, including 8.412, has it's own bootloader. The Autoinstall navcore bootloaders have been renamed to prevent them from Autoinstalling. This allows the user the option of installing the navcore's bootloader or not. To use the bootloader included, after Autostall is complete, rename the bootloader from systemX.XXXX to system.
