Imho the best way is to update the bootloader and try the new Navcore again.
Check the downloaded archive(s) for a file named system - it might be renamed with the added version number.
If so you can rename it by cutting off the version number from filename.
After a start with the new bootloader on the SD it will be installed and the new Navcore should work just fine.

grrrrrrrrrr i still cant get this damn thing working, i cant find the .meta.dct file in my map folder anywhere United_kingdom_and_Republic_of_Ireland_870.3406 it has a .meta of the same name inside the folder but no dct!
is there anything special for the bootloader i need to do other than download, extract and place into the root of the SD card?

im then running se_navcore8.412.1236_32mb
then extracting my map and running that self installer then running autoactivate/fastactivate... i still just get asked to insert the SD when i switch the sat nav on
