[SOLVED] TomTom ONE XL HD Traffic - Fail To Update

Postby jecepede » Mon Sep 07, 2020 2:34 pm

Aloha !

Normally reading this forum solves basically all my problems this time however.... I'm stuck.
And when I say stuck I mean stuck as in feet-in-the-concrete-stuck.... Ok. Here is the story.

I have the following device :

TomTom ONE XL HD Traffic (4Z00.003)
Boot Loader Version 5.5.022 (Updated it myself due to the 8Gb SD-card I use.)
32 Mb RAM, 4.4 Mb free
App 7.301 (8636/071112) (Latest version downloaded via TT-Home)
Map 'Western_Europe_1GB' v710.1617

As usual I try to update the NavCore to a nine version and use one of my 1040 or 1050 maps that I also use on other TT's I have laying around.
I do not use 1055 maps just yet, no available metacodes. Anyway, upating my NavCore is where things get tricky.

So far ALL NavCores I have tried either :
  1. Don't display a map at all
  2. Show a map but say I cant use it on this device. FA give no DCT Errors
  3. I can choose a map, but trying to enter the menu, it hangs and reboots

Among these NavCores : "9.103.ghj.CAB-navcore-XL.cab", "9.510.2-2039.CAB-navcore-LE.cab", "9.541.2-2042-CAB-navcore-LE.cab" and many others,
I have even tried navCore version 8 : "navcore_8.011.9373.HDT" : but I get nowhere fast :022:

And the final thing.... I have a whole plethora of 1045/1050 maps. These maps work fine in other devices including other TT-ONE-s.

Am I missing something here ????

Did you try "clear flash" tool ? (see navcore toppics)
NC 8.010 for One Xl 3rth edition
TomTom stopped supporting or updating these devices in 2009 and offered a refund to buy a Xl live iQ routes untill 31-7-2009.
That's why i would choose an older NC in this case.
Good luck ;)

Unfortunatly, I was unable to download the tool. All the links I found on this forum are dead.
Tried Googling but nada :022:

meester wrote:NC 8.010 for One Xl 3rth edition

I tried like five different ones of those but had no luck. Besides, most modern maps don't run on NavCore eight anyway.

meester wrote:TomTom stopped supporting or updating these devices in 2009 and offered a refund to buy a Xl live iQ routes untill 31-7-2009.

A refund... ohh boy.. oh wait, I'm a couple of decades to late for that :044:

Anyway, I don't really care what TomTom does or does not support. I'm the one doing the updating and I would like to update it to a v9.xx.xx version.
I have updated older TomToms than this one with a v-nine-core and had lots of success. But this one seem to bite my behind....
Thought these NavCores were backward compatible ? Apparently not ?

I really do not understand why the application hangs when opening the menu (if I get that far that is)...
Could my TT simply be broken, bad mem-chip ? Any other suggestions ?

Aloha Jecepede,

Clear flash tool is still to find :024: , i downloaded and checked it aswell :023: .
I hate to swear in church here..but you can find it at xxxxxxxx.
Did you also run checkdisk at your tomtom device in windows (TT right click/properties/extra/) ?
May be this 'll be a solution.
cheers.

Links to other forums is not allowed as stated in the rules

Btw, I've fixed the Clear Flash Tool Page here

Does the serial number of your device begin with F3xxxxxxx?

If so, it's one of those unusual devices that TT had problems with and had to make a specific navcore for it to get it to function properly...no other NC will work (as you've already found out)
In your case, the official navcore is NC 8.011 which you can download from [Please Register or Login to download file]

Btw, we have a record number of 476 meta codes for this series of 1055 maps here, so you definitely have no problems on that score either.

That is a good suggestion. Why did I not think of this...
I formatted both the 1Gb internal memory and the 8Gb Samsung SD card using SdFormatter v4 (From Trendy Co)
and did a checkdisk after that. Now I'll scope out a different NavCore and see what will happen....

Oh great ! I got it now :023:

But it does not seem to do anything. It says it is installng but when I check the desktop, the start menu or the C:\Program Files folder there is nothing there ???
#Googling... oh hang on.. it supposed to do that. I see the TomTom do something, I guess.......

Aye laddy. it is : F32088A00685
Actually I think v8.011 is not the latest official NavCore. At least... not according to TT-Home. That honor is bestowed upon : 7.301 (8636/071112)
This is the only version it will download, and it won't update it to anywhere higher.

Nota Bene : I have tried v8.011, it also hangs when starting.... Even with the Clear-Flash tool :022:
To be more specific, I used : [Please Register or Login to download file] indeed...

Downloading as I type :-D

Anyway, It seems a bit hopeless but I'll keep tinkering...

Thank you all for your help, I appreciate it very much.

Actually, there is one more official navcore you can try:

[Please Register or Login to download file]

Once installed, try a hard reset by either using the pin hole reset button (if it has one) or by holding down the power on button for an extended time which will show the BIOS screen...then press again to boot normally and fingers crossed it'll work.

Aloha !

Here is a little update about the TomTom-From-Hell...

So far I have tried 18 (yes, eight teen) different NavCores in the v7, v8 and v9 range and I got these results :

  1. The TT starts but I can not select any maps.
I double checked, according to the compatibility chart it should work in combination with the installed NavCore.
  2. The TT starts but the application hangs immideatly or during the opening of the menu.
  3. The TT starts and I can even select a route but it keeps randomly losing GPS signal.
It has five active sattelites, I take a freeway exit and BOOM, signal lost ???

I am really leaning toward the thought is is really broken. So I have thought of a test.

Tomorrow I have to make a long drive (+/- 50 mins) on the freeway and in the city, so I will restory the original backup.
It will have the ancient 'Western_Europe_1GB' v710.1617 map and original application v7.301 again.

If with these originakl setting the TT still keeps losing its sgnal, I know what time it is.
If not, if it works perfectly (other than some new roads it doesn't know yet) I have to try something else.....

Does it have a Sirf Star chipset or is a Global Locate? If it's a Sirf Star then that would explain the loss of a satfix and you should read this

If you find that the original navcore works properly, then I would leave it there and find a new map that's compatible with it

In the little black screen you get when pressing the power on button for more that 15 seconds I see :

Code: Select all
GPS type:    GL1 FFFF

I guess that means Global Locate 1...
However, I did read the article, very intersting :023:

Oh, almost forgot this :

Well that is the point of this whole exercise. NavCore 7.301 is not compatible with anything new-ish out there anymore.

Western_Europe_1GB 1055_10415 should be compatible even though NC 7.301 doesn't appear on the compatibility chart

That..... is most interesting

Is there a way, other than to download and install a map, to see what maps are compatible with the old 7.301 NavCore ?

Not that I know of however 1055.10415 maps have no advanced features so they should be ok but you'll have to test that out for yourself.

Obviously TT issued an updated navcore for your device but you're saying it won't work...this leaves you with two options: either dispose of it or continue with the old 7.301 navcore and try it with 1055.10415 maps and see how you get on. Orni has posted up all of the old compatibility charts here so you should be able to cross reference those to help with map selection.
