TomTom Start red X at startup

Wed Aug 21, 2024 6:40 pm

Hello,

I have a TomTom Start that has a flashing red X at bottom right of screen and a harddrive symbol at bottom left of screen.

I've read a few posts regarding using Clear Flash tool, which I've downloaded and run but am unsure if it is doing anything. Can't remember where I downloaded it from and the instructions don't quite match what is being displayed on the screen. If it is doing something it is doing it very quickly (circa 0.5 second), which might be correct considering it is simply clearing flash memory. Is the file obtainable via a link from this forum, a sthe ones I've located seem to be dead.

I've also read about completely wiping the partition but didn't want to do that straight off the bat.

Any pointers would be appreciated, thanks in advance.

ttgo.bif file contents below, map activates,just can't get to it to use.

According to TT_List the bootloader is correct. I note the NC is 9.541 whereas TT_List states 9.057. Is this an issue, or is 9.541 ok?

ttgo.bif:
DeviceName=TomTom START
DeviceVersionHW=START
DeviceSerialNumber=XDxxxxxxxxxx
BootLoaderVersion=55274
ApplicationVersionVersionNumber=9541
ApplicationVersion=562242.2
CurrentMap=Europe_North
CurrentMapVersion=865.3245

Map(s):
D:\Europe_West_1135_12395\

Storage:
Size 1884MB, Free 209MB

It sounds like a storage issue but it might be that the navcore is corrupt. Start is listed as compatible for the NC 9.541 update but there are two versions so maybe someone has updated it with the wrong one? I would backup the current setup, delete everything and try the official NC and see what happens:

If that doesn't work, you have nothing to lose by wiping the partition and reformatting the drive

Hello fredderf,

Thank you for the reply, LE NE file and the advice.

I deleted everything and reloaded NC, patched it, rebooted, loaded map and patched that, all working fine via actually doing those tasks and visibility in file explorer, but unit still red x's at bootup.

Decided to wipe partition and reformat. Back up and running exactly as above, but still booting to red x.

Anything further that can be done with this unit, or has it routed its last route long ago?

Thanks in advance

It sounds like the storage drive is corrupt I'm afraid

Hello fredderf,

Thanks for the reply.

That's ok, can't win them all.

Thanks for the guidance, appreciated.

Download
[Please Register or Login to download file]
Empty TomTom start
unpack en place content on the TomTom start. Reset start TomTom and look if it start and got the message no file
found. If that works place a map of you preference and activate. No more that is all.

Hello holyhead,

Thank you for your reply and the start.rar file.

I deleted the device contents, downloaded the file, placed it on the device and extracted.

Rebooted. It started as it has done previously - no message stating no file found.

I placed a map on the device and ran FA. Could not download meta or patch map as FA stated no ttgo.bif present.

I copied the old ttgo.bif file to the device and re-ran FA, which downloaded meta and activated the map.

Unit still the same though, boots, yellow progress bar at the bottom all the way through, then harddisk symbol bottom left and flashing red cross at bottom right.

I take it this unit is a dead unit.

Thanks for your efforts holyhead, much appreciated.
