You are Welcome.
The problem was your navcore was not patched.

I used DSA to update the Navcore with navcore_8.011.9373.HDT.cab which seemed to be successful, but the info in ttgo.bif does not change from the original 7301/8636
2. and if I operate the device via Tomtom HOME I get message 'Problem with Map' 'You cannot use this map on this device'
The device just displays the Tomtom logo then switches off and can only be revived by pressing the reset button. Also a ttgo.bif file is not created automatically when the device is restarted.
1. Your navcore is not patched.
2. Your TT Home is not patched.
FastActivate.exe can fix both of these issues.

To avoid more confusion, a patched navcore is not required to successfully activate a *EDITED* 'non-official' *EDITED* patched map. It is required to use an activated/patched map!!
BTW, activated & patched are synonymous.

By the way, does the original map that came with the device have to stay on the device and any new maps installed on an SD card? (no room on the device internal for an additional map).

NO.

Many thanks tendriver for your responses. I think that I have carried out the procedures you have suggested previously however I started from scratch again today and it appears that there is a problem during the DSA patching process as copied below:
Windows
Processing navcore_8.011.9373.HDT.cab, please wait...
No skin files release info.
Selecting kernel ttsystem.orig.1
patching file etc/rc
Hunk #1 succeeded at 24 (offset -13 lines).
Hunk #2 succeeded at 584 with fuzz 1 (offset -81 lines).
Hunk #3 succeeded at 658 (offset -78 lines).
Enter PNDNavigator/TTHome-dll file name:
Patching PNDNavigator... done.
Installing to /cygdrive/H/, please wait.
Extracting navcore_8.011.9373.HDT.cab
mv: cannot stat `/cygdrive/H//bin/gprscomd': No such file or directory
sed: can't read /cygdrive/H//bin/gprscomd.real: No such file or directory
cp: cannot create regular file `/cygdrive/H//bin/': Is a directory
cp: cannot create regular file `/cygdrive/H//bin/': Is a directory
sed: can't read /cygdrive/H//8011/lib/libhal.so.0.0.0: No such file or directory
Done.
I presume that the latter part is not correct although it doesn't say Fail! - can you help please?

We don't support DSA. FastActivate is our preferred patcher,

OK I've ditched DSA, extracted the appropriate navcore cab file to the root of the device and then used FastActive as you described. Now everything is working wonderfully. I sure that there must be a tutorial somewhere that describes this, but I was unable to find it after hours of searching.
Thanks again for your help.

Thank you for the links. There are references to installing Navcore as there are on other forums, but it was not until recently I found that the Navcore cab file could be extracted directly to the root of the device. I assumed previously that an installer/patcher (like DSA) was required.

No, an installer has never been required to load maps, navcores or anything else directly into a unit.
