TomTom VIA 160, can this be patched

Postby kersh » Mon Jan 17, 2011 8:47 am

Howdy folks, My Dad is looking at getting a TomTom VIA 160 (NZ version), can anyone tell me if a navcore/map patch exists for this model (or is anyone working on one?).
Cheers

No, that's not available yet. We have to wait until someone hacked those devices.

I hope someone is able to eventually work it out. Currently, you can't even access the internal memory of the VIA models. Nor can you do standard things like downloading new voices and maps from the TomTom site which is just ridiculous. Why even release it? If it said on the box how many things it doesn't do, I don't think the VIA range would be very successful.

It is possible to access the internal memory as it is just a Linux partition. Drivers for Win are available but afaik the easiest way is by using a bootable Linux CD (with some extras).
The whole point of this big PR stunt is that TT had to improve on the safety of their work and by changing all from Fat to a Linux filesystem it will take a bit until a ready to go patcher is available.
You already mentioned the fact that the devices are currently very limited but since the devices are more or less designed for online access it is only a matter of time until TT offers a bigger range of application for the new devices.
The first TT devices had big limitations too and with every new Navcore they got better, I think the same will happen for the VIA and 10XX models.
Right now I would not buy either of them because I don't like being a beta tester for TT and my trusty 730 does all I need ;)

Hey Downunder35m. I would appreciate if you could elaborate either here or in a PM to me. I have a VIA160 and would like to have a look under the hood. In Windows 7 I have tried changing driver to usbstor.inf (keeps forcing me to install it as a network adapter) and used several 3rd party linux disk readers to no avail. I've also tried booting to Ubuntu via my USB stick and again the Tomtom won't show as a storage device. Any input appreciated :)

Thanks

You can not directly access it from Windows.
I only got very little info that I collected from the web and the guys that solved the access problem are not really keen on sharing all necessary info :(
There was a Link for a system update of a Via some time ago and it seems to be easier to mount that image instead of using the TT.
Here you can find the available sources and platform builder for the TT Navcores [Please Register or Login to download file]
Another way might be to talk to the guys from Opentom as they usually are the first to dig deep into new devices.

Is it possible to update Maps on Tomtom VIA160? If so, what is the procedure? Also can any one suggests the latest Australia Maps for VIA160 model?

Is it possible that you at least read the first page of this thread?
The lates AU maps are the 915 editions? Available through My Tomtom or the TT web shop.
