I carried on digging around the forum after I posted last night and came across the thread below on 'universal navcore installer'. The penny dropped and I now understand what biggerdave was hinting at. But if it's not going to be stable then I'll stick with official navcores.

On a final note, how often do the meta codes come up for new UK maps for my navcore; every few months or is it years?
Do you just have to keep checking the forum pages for a match?
Presumably, once you get a match for you map code, is that good in perpetuity (all future map releases), or do they go out of date?
