I'm not completely new to downloading maps and using FastActivate (my dad had a Carminat in his car and I used to download maps for him), but I'm living on my own now and I would like to buy a TomTom myself. Possibly a second hand one, because those are mainly cheaper.

What are things I should look into when buying a new TomTom, but still wanting to download maps from here?
Are there TomToms incompatible with downloading maps and FastActivate? Or should any TomTom just work fine?

- Tomtom START 42
- TomTom Start 20

Do these devices still have new maps that are compatible? If so which one of these would have the most functions?

Buy one that you find attractive for the price.
That must be one with an SD card, so that your storage space for maps will be the largest.
Fastactivate works easiest on NAV2 devices, above that you will have to use TTactivator in combination with RLinkExplorer.

Yes it's not a problem at all.
If you can't find the right map, just ask me or fredderf, he has acces to my private ftp server.

Ok, one more question about this. Would it still work if there wouldn't be a SD card slot? I only need Europe, so the map won't be that enormous in size, but maybe it's a problem with FastActivate/TTactivator?

It's no a problem for Fastactivate neither for TTactivator

The problem is the internal memory, Europe 1080_11140 is 4.201.988.096 bytes in size
Don't buy a TomTom without an SD slot.
the advantage of such an SDslot is that you can use up to 32GB SDHC cards, on which you can write the whole world and surroundings

Hi I have another question I found a Garmin drive 51 LM (USA). Would it be possible to use a Europe map with a different language voice on this device? Or is Garmin just completely uncrackable and are there almost no maps available for?

In these times the popularity of TT's has greatly been reduced. Most people use their smartphone with Google Maps, Waze or some other freemium navigator.

If you want a TT as a single-purpose navigation device (like I do) then buy a secondhand device which has got LTM, free LifeTime Maps. Make sure the LTM contains the countries you want or need. Sometimes LTM is reduced to a region of Europe or America. Most of the times I is either Europe and NOT U.S. or visa versa. But more recent devices which could be purchased for a higher price sport Free LifeTime Maps Worldwide.
If you drive a lot you might want to look out for systems which Free Traffic Information. Either via data of your blue tooth connected smartphone of - even better - via a build-in simcard in the TT device.

Do not obtain any items without LTM. Maps grow old rather quickly. The only items which you can obtain are the devices described in this topic.

Keep in mind that maps tend to grow with every update. Beware of devices which have little storage space left. Choosing for devices with an optional sd-card are a good choice.

Others point to consider is what screen size do you need and the cost of screen mounts and cables. Some models use micro or mini USB cables which are readily cheap and are widely available. The cost of replacement screen mounts can also be very expensive. For NAV2, the 4.3" TomTom Go 520, 530, 720, 730, 920 & 930 are good options.
