I've been using Kenwood units for years, However, I got this unit, and it came installed with 2018.0 maps. I did what i'm used to doing, putting an unlocked image file on the SD card, but it didn't work this time. Searching shows that newer kenwood units block this method.
I saw in another thread, using gamin express to send the same map files to the SDcard, then replace the map img. I tried that, and when I insert the SD card it just tells me "loading map" but when I check on the unit, it still tells me it's using the 2018.0 map. I'm not sure if it's actually using the newer one and just displaying the old version number or not.
Any other suggestions?

Thanks guys. I was able to update my maps on a Kenwood DNX994s using the files in nelsonriggs45 post. I did have to rename the unlocked image file to gmapsupp.img and create two empty files (gmapsup.unl and gmapsup.gma). Not sure on the empty files 100%. However I'm on the latest maps!
Thanks again for all your time and efforts! Much appreciated!!!!!

It looks like another post got merged into mine, unsuccessfully. It seems like posts from the Kenwood DNX994s post were lost except the last one. What was the resolution?

bobjr only Posted the feedback you see ,there was no other posts associated .I merged it with your Post thinking you could start a dialog with him as you both use the same maps and have similar devices.

I appreciate that then, I have sent them a PM after seeing this, hopefully they reply. I'm pretty sure I did try the method he mentioned and it didn not work for me, perhaps patched in my model.

I am curious of this process, I use to update the map files to my head unit on my 6990HD but when I try and do this same process some people have said "works" it just says to write the files needed for garmin express to the SD, but never tries to read the new files and update to the head unit, can people give me a bit more guidance as yes I can read the new maps from the SD and use them, but not actually update the head unit with new maps (i.e. remove the SD and have the maps still loaded) not just read them from the SD, as I live in a very Hot area (Arizona), that loves to kill SD Cards... So relying on a SD card read isn't ideal, as I have to replace the cards every few months, to format them check them and sometimes replace them or so, as they just get corrupt or worse...

I'm with you guys...
I have the DNX996XR... I've tried it all, nothing is working.
The unit recognizes the SD card with a maps update, reboot... than nothing.
Something is blocking the maps from being installed.

The units must be checking the license files now.
Looks like enough people complained, kenwood is now supplying map updates for 3 years, starting with the DNX997XR

Did anyone ever figure out a resolution to this issue?
