Hello all,

Just wondering, is there a way to update the "slim line" map within the XL 350 with a full map, like in the XL 340? Or is the memory too small, not allowing such an upgrade? I need a GPS that has a superb traffic option, will the XL 340/350 do the trick?

I have downloaded the map Western and central europe 2GB 855.2884. After extracting 2 files are missing: Western_and_Central_Europe_2GB-182.meta, Western_and_Central_Europe_2GB.pna . Please, how can i get them?

I do not have this unit yet, I am looking into purchasing it though. I do not like the "simple" menu this unit comes with, if there is a way to "update" the software I may purchase the XL 350T as opposed to the more expensive XL 340T.

Also, are the "test" maps able to use the traffic functions of the GPS? I can't see why they wouldn't, but thought I'd ask just in case? Does this hold true for the Garmin as well as the TomTom? Since I am in the market for a GPS, which make/model would you recommend? I'm looking for traffic re-routing expecially, as well as ability to update the maps via "testing"?

Both the XL 340 & 350 have 1GB of storage memory & NO card slot. You couldn't give me either one. Look for a unit with at least a 4.3" screen, 64MB RAM memory, 2GB of storage memory & a SD card slot.

Hi tendriver,

I picked up a Garmin Nuvi 265WT, it's not too bad, I am not overly impressed with the traffic and the simplistic maps (I find the tomtom's maps more detailed). I picked this Garmin up this past Friday and will most likely return it this week. Does anyone have a recommendation for a good traffic rerouting GPS? My new job will require lots of highway driving and I really need a good device that will keep me away from traffic jams near Toronto Ontario, Canada. I see that Navteq has good coverage in this area and both Garmin and TomTom use their service, so it would only be down to how good each of their hardware platforms are? Does anyone have any suggestions?

Tendriver, if both the XL 340 and XL 350 have the same "guts" inside, it would sound like you could load an XL 340's map into an XL 350 and get back full control of the device as opposed to using the XL 350's "simple" key interface? Possible?

1. To my knowledge, TomTom uses TeleAtlas, which they own.

2. The "simple" menu is from the navcore, not the map. Both the 340 & 350 have the same US, Canada & Mexico map.

The TomTom uses Navteq for their traffic feed, yes, you are correct, they use TeleAtlas for the map itself.

Are the navcores interchangeable been the XL 340 and the XL350?

The 340 original navcore is 9.026. I don't find any info on the 350 navcore.

The XL 350 (EasyMenu Model) recently got updated to Navcore version 9.150. I can buy an XL 350TM cheaper than an XL 340TM, so my thought is buy the XL 350, but since I hate the EasyMenu interface, update the XL 350TM with the Navcore from the XL 340TM, do you think this will work?

I put 9.150 on my device. It is a full menu navcore.

Where are the limitations in the XL 350 then? If you are running the 9.150 navcore, how can the XL 350 only "activate" the EasyMenu portion of the code? Most likely firmware? This would make sense.

Quoted from a review site.

"Tomtom has just released app 9.150 to the XL & XXL EasyMenu models in North America.
This appears to be an about-face on Tomtom's part, returning many (but not all) of the features from earlier models that were removed in new EasyMenu models.
New features include:
- Custom POI support
- POI on map view
- Route details (map view, text view, etc)
- Route demo
- Planning preferences
- Volume preferences
It looks like Tomtom got the message that customers were unhappy with all the feature removal on the Easymenu system"
