Blek wrote:I was very pleased with the maps of wertern Europe (3201), for reinstallation of a crashed XL-iq routes from my cousin.
It took me some trials with the patcher to get it working again.
I needed to replace the complete navcore.
The TT is now working correctly after patching of the navcore with the 3201 maps.
Thanks all on the Navitotal forum for the excelent info.

dsswoosh wrote:Hi all,
I am having severe problems with getting maps to work on my new Start 2 Tom Tom. For some reason the Tom Tom Home won't download any maps at all (it says device is up to date), so it led me here
Anyway, i am at the point where i deleted everything on my Tom Tom in Windows Explorer, did a fresh update in Tom Tom Home (albeit no map) and downloaded the United Kingdom + ROI map (from here). Totally unnecessary.
My problem is, everytime i turn my Tom Tom on all i get is the following message -
PROBLEM WITH MAP
YOU CANNOT USE THIS MAP ON THIS DEVICE:UNITED_KINGDOM_AND_REPUBLIC_OF_IRELAND-254
I have tried using FastActivate ENG 02.12.2010 {1.8.01} and AutoActivate_02.12.2010 {1.5.01} (both of which seemed to work), but as soon as i turn on my Tom Tom all i get is the same message.
1. Any ideas?
The funny thing is, my Tom Tom Start 2 worked fine straight out the box, but as soon as i hit the update button in Tom Tom Home, it upgraded my Tom Tom Start 2 to a map that wasn't compatible (i got the error message above),TT Home will never download a non compatibile map. and everytime i delete the map files and connect to Tom Tom Home it refuses to download any maps simply saying "Device is up to date" even though if i turn my Tom Tom Start 2 on with no map files it will say "No Maps Installed". The map that you downloaded is stored on your computer. Start TT Home, then go Tools, Home preferences, Folders. Follow the path to the Download folder.
I think Tom Tom Home actually bricked my Tom Tom by itself. I didn't do anything wrong at all. LoL. It isn't bricked. You unknowingly did several things wrong.
If it can't be fixed, best bet is to take it back for a refund?
Thanks for help
tendriver wrote:1. Yep. To use a map that you didn't buy from TT, both the map & navore must be patched. The error message is telling you that one of them isn't patched. Run FastActivate & click the ttsystem & map buttons.
dsswoosh wrote:Thank you. I followed your instructions and my satnav is back up and running.
I will quickly explain why i think Tom Tom Home did something wrong, just for future information, in case this happens to anyone else. Although i am happy to accept it was something i did, i don't believe this is the case. I just believe i performed a rare action that not many people would do. (making Home work incorrectly).
1. I already own a Tom Tom XL, which i had updated through Tom Tom Home, with updated maps, which were then stored on the Tom Tom XL and my computer. This was connected to an account with the name *************@virginmedia.com
2. When i connected my new Tom Tom Start 2 to my PC, I didn't realise that you can only have one Tom Tom attached to one account.
3. I removed the Tom Tom XL from the *************@virginmedia.com and put it on another account (*************@btinternet.com). Then i attached my new Tom Tom Start 2 to the *************@virginmedia.com account.
I now have successfully got
Tom Tom XL attached to *************@btinternet.com
Tom Tom Start 2 attached to *************@virginmedia.com
and a copy of the Tom Tom XL map stored on my computer.
So far so good.
4. When i attached my Tom Tom Start 2 to my PC and loaded Tom Tom Home, i cliked ono update and it gave me a map to update. Unfortunately, it was the map stored on my PC that was designed for the Tom Tom XL.
5. I hit update and Tom Tom Home updates the map, and deletes the original preloaded map that originall came with my Tom Tom Start 2. (i actually watched a progess bar delete the old files).
6. When i turn my Tom Tom Start 2 on, it gave me the error i described above (PROBLEM WITH MAP
YOU CANNOT USE THIS MAP ON THIS DEVICE:UNITED_KINGDOM_AND_REPUBLIC_OF_IRELAND-254)
7. When connected to Tom Tom Home, clicking update says "Your device is up to date".
8. I of course didn't make a backup of my original map file (doh) because i believe using Tom Tom Home would update the Sat Nav correctly.
9. This is the stage i got to when i thought "Ill delete the map files from my PC and SatNav and perform a new update". This proved unsuccessful though as Tom Tom Home simply refuses to offer me any map downloads for the Tom Tom Start 2.
10. My next action was to delete all files from the Sat Nav and flash the Sat Nav in a hope to reset it. Again, Tom Tom Home refuses to give me a map update.
11. So, unless i did something glaringly wrong (apart from not backing up my SatNav before i performed updates on it), it really was a case that Tom Tom Home put a non-working map on my Tom Tom Start 2, and then further refuses to download a proper map file for me.
Anyway, your solution has got my Sat Nav back up and working, and i am eternally grateful for your expertise.
Merry Xmas and a Happy New to Year !

dsswoosh wrote:1. Point number 3 was an option that Tom Tom Home gave me. It actually asked do i want to change the account the Tom Tom XL was assigned to so i could attach my new Tom Tom Start 2 to the exisiting account. It wasn't something i performed off my own back. The Home software asked me if i wanted to do this.
2. It's a bit unreasonable to blame the user for having two Tom Tom's and the Tom Tom Home software automatically putting the wrong map version on one of them and then automatically deleting the pre-installed, correct map.
3. Because that is what happened and the cause of the error on my Tom Tom. I didn't ask Tom Tom Home to put the wrong map on, it chose the upgrade by itself. The mistake i DID make was assuming that the map that Tom Tom Home chose itself as an upgrade for my Tom Tom Start 2 was correct. But why would any reasonable user have reason to believe that the official software has chosen the wrong things to put on your system?
4. I don't want to be argumentative, but i think it is incorrect to say that in this case it is the users fault that the Tom Tom Home software put an incorrect map on the wrong Tom Tom. Sure, i probably tricked the software by my own actions into thinking that the earmarked map for my XL was the correct upgrade for my Start 2. But this is surely a development flaw in the Home software.
5. Unless of course you are saying that a user is not allowed to have two Tom Tom's connected to one PC?
6. Anyway, i don't want to put your back up because i am most grateful for your help. But i do strongly disagree that the user is to blame in this case. Because the user (myself) up until the point of error, worked within complete parameters set by the Home software. Therefore, any errors that a system develops, has developed them within the parameters of the Home software. And therefore it has to be an unforeseen occurrence when the software was developed which led to the fault.
