There are any number of ways to confirm the version. Checking the .pna file is certainly 1 of them.

Those free slots which are not available are just an attempt to get you guys to register and pay up for an account.

Just keep trying and use Jdownloader. That is somewhat easier.
Those 'free slots' will become available.

2. Jdownload will hunt for & find a free slot when & if 1 becomes available.

Is there anything special I need to do to Jdownloader setup? I left it running all night trying to download one segment and it hasn't achieved anything

There are websites that offer premium downloads as well, some for free for some you have to do a quick survey of some kind.
Might no be too easy for an unexperieced person to get going with premium cookies, especially the testing of them.

Thanks to all for the help. I'll have a go with some of the suggestions and see how I get on. Jdownloader now been trying for 2 days with no result:(

I'll stop hogging the thread now as this site is for GPS and not Jdownloader:D
