I already have Western and Central Europe on my device..

Storage cap.: 1958.5MB
Installed items: 1610.8MB
Free space left: 347.7MB

1. Is there any way of getting the latest map on the device?
2. And how can I see whether the previous owner hasn't already altered this device?

1. Yes but maps have grown a lot in size since your previous version Western_and_Central_Europe_2GB_825.2157 so the question is really:

What maps will suit my needs and with what features/is small enough to fit on my device/and already has a meta code released so it can be successfully activated?
Once you've answered those, you can update your device.

The 970/971 maps with the relevant info is here
The 970/971 meta codes are here

2. Being as the files on the device are easily accessed from Windows Explorer, you've really got no idea whether the previous owner has added or deleted anything.

If this bothers you, you can wipe the device and let TomTom Home software reinstall the navcore (operating system) for you BUT before you make any changes, make sure you backup all of the files on the device to a safe place so you can restore it if necessary.

Yes, old version fits because it's a lot smaller than new version.
New version won't because 2GB is too small.

Thnx very much. But I can't find the map of W&C Europe, only of the single parts. If there is a recent map of W&C Europe not exceeding 1850MB then that would be good enough or else Western Europe.

Do I have asr and cspeech on my device?

But as I'm on vacation in Morocco I'd like to try the latest map of this country to try it out here. If it works then I want to put the latest map of W&C Europe (or Western Europe only) on my TT XL.

If I understand correctly I should start by:
1. making a backup (how?)
2. Wipe entire device and Install patched navcore (how?)
3. Download latest map

Could someone guide me through this?

No, you just have download and install new map. You're software is original, latest and best.
Of course you'll have to patch navcore and map.

Forget about W&C and take Western-Europe which should fit if you don't waste storage with computer voices or too much unnessary voices like Norsk and Czech and Bulgarian.

Morocco? Read this

Mind you Africa and Western Europe won't fit at the same time.

1. The latest usable Western_and_Central_Europe_2GB is 965.7286 and is 2.34GB in size.
2. Features like ASR/CSpeech/ALG etc are part of the map - not the device. Your navcore 9.510 is already compatible with all maps and features.
3. The latest usable Morocco map is Morocco_945_6176
4. Make sure 'Show all files & folders' is enabled in Windows Explorer > go to the root of your device and copy all of the contents to a safe place
5. You don't have to wipe your device because FastActivate will patch your navcore for you
6. Download whichever map you want, just be sure it has a meta code released before you begin otherwise you could be wasting your time.

Okay, so I just made a backup (took like 45 minutes).

Next I'm going to download Morocco's latest map with meta code.
Erase the map Western and Central Europe and replace it with Morocco
Then run fastactivate (read something about option 2 and 3???)
Then boot the device
Then "dunno what next"...

1. Download Morocco 945.6176 & copy it to device
2. Download FastActivate.exe and extract it to the root of your device
3. Run FastActivate from the root of your device and select options 2 & 3 and wait until patch successful messages
4. Disconnect it from the PC & reboot....job done

Wow, thnx that makes it crystal clear for me, but I need to erase Western and Central Europe first before copying Morocco to the device right?

Excuse me for my noobie newbie questions.

Only if you need the space but in this case the map is only 12MB so there's no need...just find the 'Switch Map' button in the preferences when finished.

I've uploaded Morocco 945.6176 for you [Please Register or Login to download file] for you to experiment with

What i've done so far:

1. Made a backup
2. Downloaded Morocco 945.6176
3. Extracted the map to the root of the TomTom XL
4. Tried to download fastactivate but unsuccessfully

The "fastactivate" download link doesn't seem to work..

Only things I still have to do

5. Download fastactivate and extract to root of device
6. Run fastactivate > option 2 and 3

Then I'm done..

Thank you very much, it works.

What i did:
First of all I read a lot in the tutorials and related topics, did not understand all of it but popped a few questions and you guys helped me out.

So
1. I hooked up my tomtom to my laptop, went to Windows Explorer and made sure all hidden files and folders were shown and then went to the root directory and copied everything to my laptop (backup)
2. Downloaded the map i wanted and extracted it to the root of my TomTom device
3. Downloaded fastactivate and extracted it to the root of my TomTom device
4. ran fastactivate options 2 and 3
That was all it took

I just took my TomTom on a test drive and it worked perfectly, so i'm very grateful. :023: :023: :023:

Now it's time to put on the map of Western Europe.

Fredderf, in this process i haven't done anything with a meta code, i mean i didn't even come across one.

So if i'm going to download the map Western Europe i won't have to do anything with a meta code I assume and just go through the exact the same process as I have done for the map Morocco...

Good, it's quite an old map but it's the latest one with a meta code.

So now you know what you're doing, have a look posts #20, 22 & 23 in this thread so you can decide what Europe map to go for.
