Mercedes-Benz Navigation System Upgrade/Install Tutorial

One of my mate has a Mercedes (forgot Model) but his Navigation System is almost 10 years old (original). I was wandering how to find out system info, back it up and find and install new maps on it.
Tutorial/Guide step by step plz. :033:
