Okay, I want to request some help with updating (esp. new maps) a Mio Spirit 470.

I have some experience with updating TomTom devices but have got no experience with this one.

1. I read a few (Fatboyfun) threads and I gathered that the original software of it cannot be updated and that I would need to replace it with other software?
2. Can I then replace the maps with more recent ones?
3. Is Navteq Q3 the latest? (from filesupload100)

I am not familiar with the Mio devices and various models (Spirit, Moov, Navman???) and need exact references to the appropiate downloads.

As with TT, it is very confusing to start doing things to start off with.
Thanks in advance!

You are correct about not being able to update the original software, however it's easy to unlock and run something else.

Tomtom is not going to work (WinCE 6) but iGO primo 2.x does work. You can use latest maps as found in the iGO map forum, you will see references to tomtom maps in there, that's because tomtom bought and rebranded teleatlas maps, these are not the same as the tomtom maps found in the tomtom forum, iGO can use maps from different providers.

Okay, the Spirit 470 did not get a GPS connection anymore with the original software. Didn't know what to do anymore.
So I've downloaded the Primo2 software.

But now I'm wondering which map I should take.
I started downloading this Navteq Europe Q3 2012 + IGO PRIMO Truck V2.0 but I'm wondering if that is the one I should take because the first part (of ten) is 400MB.
I only have less than 2GB on the Spirit 470.

Am I missing something or should I take Navteq Europe Q3 2012-Torrent?
This one specifies: Any working version of Primo (all versions and platforms) so it should be okay.
Am I right in this?

PROBLEM ! I still don't connect to GPS.
The screens says it's looking for it but it does not connect ? I've put it outside into the open air several tiimes, reset it, switched it on/off...
What can the problem be?

The maps themselves are split into separate files for each country/region, so you don't have to put the whole archive on, just your own country if you like.

The problem with the GPS not working is a bit more concerning, within the original software there may be a "reset GPS" option, it's in the moov smartst but I can't remember about spirit.

There are also options in the wince control panel for the GPS receiver.

Yeah, I tried the GPS reset in the original software but that did not work.

Also, within WinCE I discovered a Orion Control icon with some resetting/Stop/start options but it has not worked yet.
The General tab does say 'Downloading GML firmware', 'Waiting for GML data' and 'No GML data'.
There is another tab titled GPS with some options. One says 'When system is reset, x start Orion Service and x start GPS. So far, I've not been able to make that work.
Would it help you if I posted some screenprints of these tomorrow?

Or should I be starting to think that the GPS thingy has broken down?

Thanks for your help !

I have the same Orion control panel in mine, I never needed to use it.

Does it see anything, even just one satellite?

Might be worth opening it up to see if the antennae wire has come off.

At this point it does not see anything.
At this moment is unscrewed outside in harsh daylight conditions with power on and Primo2 loaded... ;-)

Okay, opened it up for three quarters. Bottom part I did not succeed in detaching...

I see wires to battery and speaker.
I do not see antennae wire for gps.

Is the 'rubbery' square part on top of the Spirit the GPS unit?

Mon Mar 18, 2013 10:08 am

I would say so, on some devices there is a thin black wire that runs to it, that has tiny little plugs on each end, similar to the wifi antennas in laptops, I have known them to become detached resulting in loss of GPS signal.

It looks like that one is directly connected to the board, check the connection for bad solder joints, unseated edge connector etc.

It looks clean and dry and its screws are fine.
What you would expect from a not-that-old device which did not go head down in some toilet... ;-)

I add some pictures from the WinCE Orion prog. Perhaps it will give you some insight.

As stated before, I played around with a few setting but, obviously, to no avail.

If not, I'm giving up and will be returning it to its rightful owner. Sigh !

On another matter: I installed map updates yesterday on Primo2 and they are working fine (apart from GPS making all useless) but I can only find Netherlands EXTENDED POI not 'regular' POI.
When I seek for a hospital in Rotterdam it only shows me hospitals in Belgium. Not one in the Netherlands.

If the device was working properly, would I need to fish up some older Netherlands 'regular' POI ?
It did show some other Dutch POI, which, logically, should come from the extended POI file.

Mon Mar 18, 2013 10:40 am

To use the extended poi, you must have the normal poi, it doesn't have to be from the same release, ie, you can use Q2 poi and Q3 extended poi, We have the same problem in the UK.

But it looks like hardware has failed here, particularity if it just "stopped working" in normal use.

Okay Fatboyfun (I never thought I would speak to a man in this manner), thank you for your counsel and tutorials.

In a way they did their job but what can a man do if hardware fails to perform? :)

Mon Mar 18, 2013 11:28 am

By the way, is there a way to relock the device in case I should want to reinstall the original Mio software?
I did make a backup.

Mon Mar 18, 2013 3:49 pm

If you have a complete backup then just erase everything and reload the backup.

Mon Mar 18, 2013 4:32 pm

Yeah, I guess that would do the trick.
This whole business of unlocking and WinCE underneath the navigation software makes me a bit nervous.
I just compared the backup with the current content and the difference is really only the Primo and Unlock files.

The only thing to watch out for is hidden/system files, Windows hides these by default, so make sure you turn on the options to view them before making the backup
