Thanks for the response. I do not have an obsession with the bootloader. Some of us are not as knowlegable as you regarding navcores and bootloaders. I am just trying to understand the relationship between them. I know if I run into problems I can come to the forums on Navitotal and get help from the experts. My apologies for appearing over concerned about bootloaders.

EVERY navcore has it's own bootloader version. Updating the bootloader on a GO 910 is not an issue. Knowing this, the next time you upgrade your navcore, you can allow that navcore's bootloader to be included with peace of mind.

as a newbie, I understood that every navcore come with a different bootloader. so, when you change a navcore, you change the bootloader too. except the bootloader cannot be downgrade anymoore (from what I understood). this is as dangerous as simple it is. it does´n matter what backup you did before, you cannot change that anymore. so, if the bootloader is not fitting your nav, it will brick it!
so don´t change your navcore, because all you need is new maps. it doesn´t worth broken your nav. just patch your original navcore, the new maps, voices, etc. and it will be enough.
this is a free advice from me. but, after all, is your nav, your money..

Is navcore 9.061 or 9.160 better? What is the difference between these navcores, as I cant find the answer....

I don't understand you question, these Navcores are for different devices.
There is no better...

What I mean is, my understanding is that the navcores 9.061, 9.150, 9.160 etc are all for XL devices. I have an XL 340 which should have 9.061 and I have installed 9.160 in the hope that I will get some extra features of newer devices.

I was looking to find what the differences between these are? I notice that, for example, 9.061 is larger in size by several MB compared to 9.160.

If you need to know the differences I'm afraid you'll have to ask TT.
Why not use the original Navcore and some features in the menu are missing try the the custom menu from the tutorials.

I know the general rule is the "best" navcore is the latest one offered by HOME for the device. But this isn't true in my case - the responsiveness and performance of an original 9.160 over 9.061 appears to be quite noticeable, even though the navcore features appear to be the same. Tomtom seem to have made improvements and optimisations in later device navcores which have not been released for older compatible devices containing exactly the same hardware. So you see, this is where I am confused.

I agree that TomTom's way of naming software is not really logical. I have GO 710 and I have just tested to upgrade to 9.205 which is meant for Rider. It seems to work, but I can not say if there is something missing or if it is going to fail after awhile. I have not tested 9.051 that is also recommended for this device. Has someone clearer picture about which version would be best for this model? I have read forum but there seems to be suggestions for both versions.
