Hi Downunder35m,

Yay! I got it! :)

I now have a window with Wile E. Coyote, prompting me to choose which version of 9.540.2 I want to install. I have a TomTom 550 XL TM. The choices in the list are "X50 Devices", "GO models", "32MB Devices" and "Soundfix". I assume I should choose "X50 Devices"? Please confirm. I will wait for further instruction from you.

Since I was able to get this far, I don't need to download any "mirror" files, correct?

Thank you!

Best wishes,
Julie

1. Yep.
2. Yep. A mirror is just an additional site to download from if there is a problem with the other download link.

Hi Downunder35m,

Thank you!

You're sure that the XXL 550 TM has 64mb of RAM? I tried doing a search online to see whether it's 64mb or 32mb, and I cannot seem to find the answer. It's an older model (2010, I believe). You're sure it's got 64mb? Thanks!

Best wishes,

I am not Downunder, but I am 100% sure that your XXL 550TM has 64MB of RAM memory!!

If in doubt use Jdownloader next time.
Once installed you simply copy a link from the forum into the clipboard and JD will do the rest for you - no popping up ads, no confusion, if a captche or passwort is needed JD will prompt you for it.

Hi Tendriver and Downunder35m,

Thank you so much for your help!

I finished the installation of the x50 files for the 9.540.2 Navcore, and for some reason I don't notice any real differences on my TomTom XXL 550 TM. Am I supposed to do something else (I remember something about you saying that I should play around with different "mods"?)? The layout and features looked the same as my original XXL 550 TM...in fact, I think some features went missing (the "Options" menu?)...?

I then had to reinstall the U.S. map from TomTom Home, and and I had to install a voice, because all of my voices disappeared. Is that correct? If I keep the custom menus from Navcore 9.540.2, what will happen when TomTom Home wants to install updates? Is it safe to install them, or should I ignore them? Will they overwrite your custom Navcore?

Thank you for putting up with all of my questions!

Best wishes,
Julie

All you voices would be in your backup and as long as you use a X50 emulation on an X50 device the Navcore will look the same.
The emulations are mainly so users of low end devices can get the full set of features TT has to offer.
And even if Home updates your Navcore the worst that happens is that you have to patch it again, no harm possible.
I have not connected my TT to Home for over 5 years now and am still a happy camper ;)

Hi Downunder35m,

Again, thank you for all of your help!

I think I got spooked once I saw that the x50 layout looked so similar to that of my 550 XXL TM, and I think I noticed some missing features, so I restored my original layout with the backup files I had saved. I think I should have played around with other layouts (x40, x30, maybe?) before I got so skittish. After all of that time I spent, I finally downloaded the files you worked so hard on....and now I am not using them. Is the 550 XXL TM considered a "low end" TomTom? I guess I don't know the full set of features that TomTom has to offer, and I don't know what I'm missing.... What am I missing? I may go back and try again to use your 9.540.2 Navcore. Now that I have downloaded your files to my computer, I can still access them, correct? Where can I find the Wile E. Coyote menu? Thank you very much for all of your time & patience with me!!

Best wishes,
Julie

For devices like yours it makes not much sense to use any other Navcore than the one Home offers.
You alredy got a "high end" device that can use the latest Navcore, but there are also people that simply don't like the X50 look and prefer the x30 or x40 emulation.
So no harm done if you are happy with a working Navcore.
You can try the 9.540 and it will work but you won't see much difference and it will act the same way as your original Navcore.

The coyote menu is designed by a user for the installer, it is useless as a stnd alone menu.
Just wanted something that does not look too boring, but you switch the installer to standard mode if required.

Hi Downunder35m,

Thank you again!

I feel badly that I bombarded you and Tendriver with a million questions and I didn't end up changing my Navcore! But I am proud of myself that I was able to successfully download the files (it was super-tricky for me, for some reason!) I am happy that I have the option to switch to your Navcore and play with the emulations if I want. I ended up purchasing 3 voices from TomTom, and I really want the ability to switch voices on a whim without having to go to the computer each time. So, if I end up using a custom menu, I will need to make sure it has the "Switch Voices" feature. Also, I want to make sure it has the "Browse by Text" feature (as I mentioned), and from doing my research, it sounds like some recent versions of the Navcore put out by TomTom have that feature, so I'm hoping that version 9.510 has it! :)

Oh, I didn't mean to ask about the coyote per se....I just didn't pay attention to the folder where your custom files downloaded to, so I was asking where to find them on my computer (I was asking for the default name of the folder where your files download to, I don't think I changed the folder name during the download process). But I can probably find the files on my computer. No worries.

Thanks again for your help!

Best wishes,
Julie

1. I hope you looked thru our voices & didn't find what you wanted before you bought them!!
2. For my clarification, what are you referring to as a custom menu? Switch Voices & Browse by Text are not new. My device is 8 years old & EVERY official navcore for it in those 8 years has had these features. X20, X30, X40 & X50 emus have these features. Your XXL 550 is an exception to the rule.

Hi Tendriver,

Thank you!

Now I'm confused again.... I thought that if I installed the Navcore 9.540.2 and used one of the emus, I would lose "Browse by Text" and "Switch Voices", so if I wanted to switch a voice, I'd have to connect the device to the computer, switch back to the 9.510 Navcore from TomTom, switch the voice, and then switch back to 9.540.2 That seemed like too much! From what I could tell from other posts, it seemed that you couldn't switch voices directly from the device while using 9.540.2... That was probably just my confusion.

And the "Browse by Text" feature has always been one that I have wanted! We finally used the TomTom in the car, and I found that feature...hooray! But it's not easy to find... You have to click the "Details" button right after you program the route. Once the map is displayed and the route is in motion, I couldn't figure out how to get back to the screen with the "Details" button. There has got to be a way to do it mid-route, I just cannot figure out how to do that.

What do you mean that my TomTom XXL 550 TM is an exception? All the other models have those 2 features? My XXL 550 has those features with Navcore 9.510, I just would like to be exposed to more features (I don't even know which features I'm missing between 9.510 and 9.540.2!) That's what I mean when I say I was trying to get a "custom menu" (I meant I was trying to get additional features [that I don't even know about] from 9.540.2)....

So, in your opinion, should I switch back to 9.540.2? Since I have already downloaded those files, I hope the switchover would be easier?

Oh! I didn't know that you have a forum where you share TomTom voices! The ones I purchased are John Cleese (UK), Yosemite Sam (U.S.) and Bert & Ernie (U.S.) Do you have those voices in your collection?

As always, thanks for your help!

Best wishes,
Julie

1. If you set the emu for a unit that doesn't have a certain feature, then it won't be available on your unit either.
2. Click in the lower right corner of the "route is in motion screen", & you will be returned to the route building screen, with the details screen in the lower left corner.
3. Please disregard.
4.The best way to learn about features is to Google Search for the reviews of different units.
5. If 9.510 is working for you, I would leave it alone.
6. voices-f126/ Take a look

Hi Tendriver,

You're fantastic! So is Downunder35m. You have been so thorough and patient with me!

It sounds like I am better off with 9.510 and updating to new versions with TomTom Home. As mundane as that sounds, I think I am just getting too confused with the custom Navcores and emus. It's entirely my fault, not yours. I did do significant research online (mostly on Google) to see which TomTom would best suit our needs. I know I picked an older model, and there probably is a much better choice for us, but somehow I settled on the XXL 550 TM... In reading some posts on this NaviTotal website, though, I was able to do some modifications to some files to help our device pronounce "101" as "one oh one" instead of "one west one" and "Los Angeles" instead of "Los Anheles" (I think I programmed "Los Angeles correctly...I didn't find the coding spelled out, so I tried my best guess at it! I don't know how to test it.) So I am really proud of myself for doing my research and for doing some custom programming! However, yesterday my husband pointed out that our device doesn't actually speak street names or highway numbers, so I don't know how useful my programming will be. Ah well...

Tendriver, thanks for the link to the voices forum! It looks like John Cleese and Yosemite Sam are already there. The only other one I purchased is Bert & Ernie. Do you want Bert & Ernie? If so, I can see if I can upload the files.... It'll have to wait for a while, though, as my husband is now using the TomTom on a daily basis in the car and I don't have it near the computer anymore. If you want the voice, though, I will make an effort to get it!

Thanks again for all of your help!

Best wishes,
Julie
