how do I install this for MapSource to make my own map? I cannot find the install file I would usually use.

Copy the gmap folder to your Garmin data folder - its usually C:\ProgramData\Garmin\Maps and it may be a hidden folder

Thanks ronand, I tried this (and also ran the Unlock Mapsource.exe file before that) but MapSource did not recognize the map. Is there anything else I am missing?

Have you tried mapinstall instead of mapsource? mapsource is very old.
