City Navigator North America 2026.10 FID 12700

After I save a gmapsup1.img map in the Garmin directory on the memory card, should I be able to see it on the list of available maps on the nuvi Map Info page? My nuvi 760 doesn't list a map if it's named gmapsup1.img, but it has no problem seeing and using a map if the map is named gmapsupp.img or gmapprom.img.

I saved the new Eastern US map named gmapsupp.img onto the memory card. If I rename the new Western US map to gmapprom.img and save it in NVRAM (replacing the existing gmapprom.img), then select both maps on the nuvi Map Info page, would the nuvi be able to use both maps when calculating routes? I occasionally travel back and forth across the boundary dividing the two maps. Thanks in advance.

Your device can use an SD card up to 32Gb why not try using the split as Garmin did and put the smaller Canada & Mexico (D9644090A).rar - 859.9 MB on the device named gmapprom.img and US(D9643090A).rar - 2.4 GB on your SD card in the Garmin folder renamed gmapsupp.img, then you won't have any problems calculating routes over the split made for devices with a 2Gb file size limit.

Thank you, but I don't understand your suggestion. How can I use the US(D9643090A).rar map (2.4 GB compressed, 3.5 GB decompressed) on my device which has a 2 GB file size limit? Also, I don't need the Canada and Mexico maps. I only travel across the Eastern US/Western US boundary, and each of those maps is about 1.7 GB decompressed.

Read again ,small map on the Device, Big map on an SD card.

Update your Firmware as there was a Firmware update to enable a second map on an SD card if it's not 4.50

Your device is not listed by Garmin as having a 2GB file size limit, but I'm sure you've tied over the limit ?
I've added a Central version to the post U.S. split into under 2Gb file sizes
The following devices cannot read or use any file that is larger than 2GB in size:
BMW nüvi® 350
BMW nüvi® 360
nüvi® 350
nüvi® 360
nüvi® 370
nüvi® 600
nüvi® 650
nüvi® 660
nüvi® 670
nüvi® 680
nüvi® 5000
Though these devices are compatible with SD cards larger than 2GB, any individual file on an SD card or the device's internal storage cannot exceed 2GB in size, or the file will not be seen by the device. This is most commonly a problem with European mapping but will occur with any 2GB file. The above device series are not compatible with the supplemental mapping of Europe for this reason.

Thanks for this!

Found an excellent condition Nuvi 2597LMT (2013) for 6 dollars at a local resale shop that refused to be recognized by Windows and Garmin Express, so I'm glad to discover that there are still maps available to load via SD card. I loaded a 32GB sd card and placed all the files appropriately (which went okay, despite having to search for more detailed formatting info), and now I have a fully functioning GPS with live traffic, weather, and current maps. In some ways this thing is more feature-rich than Apple and Google Maps, which is honestly kinda shocking. Been wanting to simplify things and use a standard GPS and road atlas for road trips and not rely so much on phones.

Hope everyone has a good weekend. :024:

Hello :039: , I'm quite new to the Garmin GPS world. I recently bought a GPSMAP 496 and I'd like to install these maps onto it. I believe I have to use MapSource to do so. Could someone please tell me how I can load these maps onto MapSource / into my GPSMAP 496? Thanks! :001:

Welcome to the forum.
For safety I would not attempt trying to install maps directly onto the device, with an Data card if there is any file corruption you can just unplug it and start again this cannot be said for the device.
For your Garmin GPSMAP 496, you'll need a Data card formatted to FAT32 and speed class 10 or higher, with a recommended capacity of 8GB or larger.
You can download both US and Canada & Mexico maps
Try
1. Create a folder "Garmin" on the Data card
2. Renamed the CanadaMexico Map to "gmapsup1.img"
3. Renamed the US Map to "gmapsupp.img"
4.Copy both to the Garmin folder on the Data card a try.
I don't have this device, the garmindevice.xml holds all the locations of what goes where.

<Name>PreProgrammedMaps</Name>
<File>
<Specification>
<Identifier>IMG</Identifier>

<Location>
<Path>Garmin</Path>
<BaseName>gmapprom</BaseName>

</Location>
<TransferDirection>InputOutput</TransferDirection>
</File>
</DataType>

Thank you so much! I ended up figuring it out. Garmin GPSMAP 496 devices don't use regular SD cards, but rather proprietary DataCards. To install Map Software on 496 devices you need to use MapSource and to transfer maps via a Data Card reader (to the data card directly) or a mini usb cable (to the device directly). Additionally, to load the maps into MapSource, you have to run the installer in "For PC.part1.rar"

Thanks GarminNuvi!!

Hi, thanks for the maps. Is it possible to merge US and Canada and Mexico into a single map?

No., Garmin has split North America into 2 sections US and Canada/Mexico because their devices cannot read .img files larger than 4Gb

Thanks for this post with the "Map" folder tip, worked perfectly for my 1350

FTR, for my Nuvi 205W, I had to remove the .img extension in the filename.

1. It needs to be folder "Garmin"
2. Renamed the CanadaMexico Map to "gmapsupp")
3. Renamed the US Map to "gmapsup1"

Are you sure that the 1350 supports Junction View? I know it does have Lane Assist.
What are the JCV Photo Real used for?

FTR. This is because your PC is not set to show extensions and you renamed it to gmapsup1.img.img & gmapsupp.img.img a common mistake.

Yes 13xx & 14xx can use JCV ,you may have to activate additional feature on units sold in other regions. PhotoReal Junction views are for later models and are not compatible with your device.
This board requires you to be registered and logged-in to view hidden content.

Before Proceeding:
Firstly, update your firmware to latest version 6.30 if it's not already running that version. To check, press Tools>Settings>System>About.

1. IMPORTANT. Ensure your unit has a fully charged battery.
2. Fully read the preamble above if you haven't already.
3. Make a full backup of your file system including the .System folder, or at least do a backup of your favourites if you wish to restore them. To show hidden folders see [Please Register or Login to download file] .
4. IMPORTANT: Either HARD RESET the unit, or CLEAR NONVOL. Hard reset is done by holding the lower RH corner of the screen while turning the unit on, follow the prompts. Clear Non-volatile memory by pressing the 'Speed' field on the map page, hold the centre of the Speedometer for ~6 seconds, when the Diagnostics Page appears, press Developer Info>'Nonvol Available>Clear Nonvol. [Clear Nonvol is simply more comprensive than hard reset].

How to Do It:

1. Download the zipped file: Garmin.zip
2. Extract it onto an otherwise completely empty microSD card.
3. Ensure your unit is completely off. Place the card into your unit and turn it on.

You will see the alternating words 'Software Loading' and 'Loader' appear on the screen. Let the process completely finish and the unit reboot. Then hard reset or clear NV again.

Check that you have both 16_backup.bin and 41_backup bin in the folder microSD:/Garmin/Backup. If both are present the process should have been successful and you will have a new file named update.log in the Updater/xxxx folder [xxxx is your unit's HWID, e.g. 0972 for 13/14xx]. The log is simply a form of .txt file and can be opened with any text editor. The contents should read:
Parsing "rrgn,16,1:/Garmin/backup/16_backup.bin"
Success
Parsing "rrgn,41,1:/Garmin/backup/41_backup.bin"
Success
Parsing "xrgn,16,1:/Garmin/16.bin"
Success
Parsing "reboot"

Keep copies of both bin files [especially 41_backup.bin] in a safe place. 41.bin should have size of 4096KB. It is the most important region on your unit and contains important data specific to your unit. The information is encrypted, but if the region ever becomes corrupted, it can be restored from your 41_backup.bin

To use Junction View, you will need to obtain the relevant JCV file for your current map. The file either goes in the folder nuvi:/.System/JCV or microSD:/Garmin/JCV.
D9673060A.jcv & D9674060A.jcv
