StreetPilot 2720 data transfere error with 2013 maps.

Postby tenoc » Thu Apr 25, 2013 1:14 pm

I have 2 StreetPilot 2720. Currently I have CNNANT 2012.40 installed. I have attempted to install CNNANT 2013.40 using gmapprom.img. On each attempt (with each StreetPilot) after completing about 80% of the install I get a data transfer error and the install aborts. . . . :girl_cray: . . . I then attempted to install 2013.30 version with the same data transfer error results .

I then reinstall 2012.40 with no problems.

Is the 2013 version larger (?) different (?) not suitable for the SP2720 (?)

Any suggestions will be welcome.

Every new map version is a bit larger than the version before! Check the free space on your device and compare it with the file size before you transfer maps or other files to your device.
And check with Garmin WebUpdater, if you have current firmware on your device.

1. I do not think one can check the free space on a StreetPilot 2720????? I do not know how.

2. WebUpdater is current.

After a lot of research it looks as if the 2113.40 file is 1.78Gb and the 2012.40 file is 1.58Gb. I think that the SP2720 only has space for about 1.70Gb.

Now I need to research how to remove Mexico for the CNNANT 2013.40 file.

FYI -

All of CN North America gmapprom.img 2013.40 without Mexico is still 1,712,224 KB so it's still going to be close and may not fit.

Do you have Mapsource ? If so you can build/compile yourself a custom img that is no larger than the previous one that fit ok.

Mapsource could be one way.
Current method would be using gmap version with BaseCamp/MapInstall.

Could you explain in more detail. I am not sure what you are talking about.

UPDATE: Thanks, I found out how to do this, and it worked using MapSource "patched". I did not find out how to select a series of maps with BaseCamp and then send to the "C" drive.

 1. download from thread City Navigator North America NT 2013.40 e.g. the version MapSource with .msi install UnLocked from post #1
 2. install map and enclosed programs (BaseCamp, MapInstall, WebUpdater) with *.msi file
 3. use MapInstall to choose the map tiles and transfer the tiles to your device - required and available space will be shown by MapInstall
Another question: I never had a streetpilot 2720 in my hand, so I can't understand, why you can't find out how much free space you have. Can't you connect the device to PC via USB as removable disc? If not, isn't there an option in menu to change interface mode into mass storage mode?

SP 2720 does not show up as a removable disk when connected to PC via USB and you can not change to mass storage mode. Remember the 2720 is almost 6 year old technology.

This doesn't matter - my nearly 8 years old Garmin GPSmap76csx can change storage mode :D

...but can MapInstall handle your device and does it show avilable space?

From Garmin:

Thank you for contacting Garmin International.

With each update, the maps get larger in size. I'm sorry but there are no options for installing the full regions you need to a 2720. It doesn't have enough internal storage nor does it have additional storage options such as an SD card slot. The only way you can get the maps you will need is to let the updater install one of the smaller partial regions then using the program Mapinstall to copy additional maps you will need.

With Best Regards,

That means you can use MapInstall, as I already supposed.
