Binatone B350 error - "hive partition"

Postby henrythebee » Mon Jan 09, 2012 10:58 am

My Binatone B350 has been running (TT, Amigo etc) fine for over a year, but has had very little use as it's my spare machine. Out of guarantee though, obviously. Suddenly it fails to boot - and after a minute goes to a blue screen with the words "Recover the hive partition". Nothing I do (including pushing the hidden reset button) seems to make any difference. Is it bricked? Will it make any difference if I can somehow reflash the firmware? (If so, my number 1 machine is also a B350, so any ideas on how to transfer the firmware image from one to the other would be welcomed!)

Google search reveals that other people seem to have had the same problem with the B430 but the only 'advice' they've received is "it's F***ed" and "Buy a new one"! The sort of advice you'd expect at Curry's. Hope there's a better way.

The registry is stored in it's own partition on residentflash, This may have become corrupted, A reflash may fix it.

I have a B350 ROM, don't know if it's WinCE 5 or 6 though, I can upload this evening if you like.

Yes please! Certainly worth a try. Mine is WinCE5 (runs TT well, unlike the WinCE 6 machines I've tried)

Though I'm not absolutely sure what to do with the image when I've got it. I've got a copy of CE regedit - will that do the trick?

I'll upload it later with instructions, It'll hard reset the device which should fix the registry unless the flash chip has failed.

I've just taken an image of my other B350 registry, using ActiveSync and CEregedit. unfortunately I cannot get this image onto the defunct machine, as Windows tells me the "Device cannot be recognised" via the USB cable. The working B350 was recognised immediately.

Is there another way?

I imagine your B350 image will be much the same as the one I have, so there's probably no point in your uploading it.

Thanks for your help......

life was never easy.

The ROM is updated via a SD card, you don't need a connection to the PC

ROM Files for a Binatone B350

Copy all 5 files onto a blank SD card.
Put SD card in the Binatone B350.
Switch on whilst holding down the sleep button, when the white screen appears release the sleep button and let it do its work.
If all is OK the Binatone B350 should now boot normally.

NOTE: I have not personally used these files!

I don't know what O/S this will install, or even if it will work, but as the device sounds unusable at the moment you've got nothing to lose.
Currently sleeping...

Thank you. Unfortunately, no joy. Booting up doesn't get as far as the white screen. I've tried all combinations of reset, off/on and sleep switches. All I get is the blue screen (eventually) with "recover the hive partition...".

Life's too short for more messing about I'll buy another unit. (So the man from Curry's wins - damn!)

But thanks again for your help. (I've also got a bricked Navigo v2 - you haven't got the ROM files for that have you?)

Thx

I suspect the flash chip has failed and is not accessible anymore, I don't have the ROM for the Navigo V2

Binatone's are shipping with Windows CE6 installed, so that means no tomtom navigator.

Many thanks anyway: well worth a try.I'll keep the ROM image in case my other Binatone (technically the wife's) goes belly up.

There are some very versatile 4.3" generic satnavs on ebay (ebest.2010), bidding tends to close at £27 or so, much cheaper than Binatone. I've set up a few for friends, and the older CE5 models are better, if you can find them. They ship with Amigo, 2010 maps.

just for the matter off intrest....how long did you keep the sleep button pressed
while booting when trying to flash with the rom that fatboyfun sent you, when i
reflashed my binatone x430 i had to hold the sleep button for a good 15 - 25
seconds before it started to flash, and it took about 15 mins when it finished

as for the bricked navigo v2,do you know if you can boot up from the sd card
if it can i can upload you a rom,and instructions on what to do if you want

What problem were you trying to fix by flashing the rom?
