Chinese NoName GPS bricked

Postby mmsoft » Fri Feb 24, 2012 3:42 pm

Hi,
I have generic Chinese GPS (no brand, just written GPS on it) that is not working. When turned on it stops on pmp.exe, saying: "Cannot find 'pmp' (or one of its components)."
I have also second GPS, same as the bricked one, that is working and in System informations it sais:

ROM Version: 84.TMC20091210
Software Version: V4100115E
OEM Info:
Platform ID: 94A4213034581010
Device ID: 2D8E8025010007AC

How can I find firmware to flash the non working GPS, or how can extract flash ROM from the working one (they are exactly the same).

Thank's

If the units are exactly the same then you could copy the internal flash of the unit that is working and copy it back to the unit that isn't working. You would connect them to your computer using a USB cable.
If it ain't broke don't fix it!

Non working unit is not recognized when connected to USB.
That was my first idea and why I get another same unit, to copy the FLASH ROM, but can't figure it out how to do that.
When working unit connected with Active Sync I can see 3 partitions: Windows CE partition, Network (empthy) and ResidentFlash partition with IGo8 on it and some .bin files

What happened to, or what was done to the non-working unit immediately prior to when you noticed it was "bricked"?
But that's just my opinion..I could be wrong.

Customer installed other software, doesn't know exactly what (someone else did it) and after couple of hours the unit stopped working.
And now he is returning the GPS at my store.

If it won't connect with Activesync then the customer has probably tried editing the registry (HKLM\init) to bypass the default shell when the device is started, This registry key is responsible for starting several processes including activesync, if this is done incorrectly (my guess is they assumed shell.exe was the default shell, when it's an essential windows process and replaced it with something called pmp.exe) the device won't boot properly

Only a ROM flash will fix it, but finding the files could be impossible.

When you connect the working unit to the computer do you see anything in "My computer?"

Maybe.
Have a look here:

You may have to do a bit of reading, and a bit of research.

I can connect working unit as USB - then there is one partition with IGo foder and 4 .bin files: gpspara0.bin, gpspara1.bin, gpspara2.bin and gpspara3.bin.
When connecting with Active Sinc - there is two more partitions: WindowsCE partition and Network partition (empty)

I would copy everything that is available on the internal drive of the working device first. Then try using "Total Commander" or "Free Commander" to see if you can transfer those files/folders to the non-working device.

Will it connect to a PC and allow you to browse the file system?
