Ok, if there is no way to get the screen working properly and you get no connection to the PC either, I would say it is time to retire the old thing.
You could ask the Navman support if they can re-flash your device, but they might say no because it is too old.
I think the N20 came out about 6 years ago, so the hardware is pretty outdated, same as for my 520 :(

Hi i have been reading up what little there is and i can get into test area and there is an option to boot from sd card if i have the files am i right.

Thu Apr 28, 2011 9:53 pm

Yes you can, You need a correctly named executable on the sd card, However this won't fix the screen alignment issue, I'll search around for the filename.

On my SD it is a folder "NAVMAN" and in it the file "NavcarCE.exe".
But I had the same file on the flash memory inside a folder "Shakleton".
On the original SD there was only the map, the folder and the other EXE were added during an update that I made.

Hope that helps for an N20 too ...

Hi Guy's just an update found n40 files that can flash n20 and now have stable boot but because fatboyfun instructed me to rename nav program
it cant load far enough to let me sync so now my question is can i put something on sd so i can sync and undo the changes thanks.

Normally on navman/mio's auto.exe in the root of the storage card is launched instead of the original application, rename the screen calibration utility and try.
Also try creating a folder called 2577 and put autorun.exe in (renamed screen calibration tool)

Use the screen calibration tool as it seems to put Windows on hold while it's active.

All navman devices with AppStartupSec.exe look for a file on the storage card before running the original, Also try Downunders suggestion above.

I find that you can explore the device with ActiveSync before it says it's connected, and the Window doesn't close like with USB mass storage devices, It may be enough to get in briefly and make the change.

Hi Fatboyfun thanks for reply tried first two suggestions no go and i cant explore in activesync because until it connects the tab is greyed out
or am i doing something wrong

Go in My Computer and try opening My mobile device or similar, You'll probably just get a blank page, let it do a few reboot cycles and see if it gets enough of a connection to browse.

The auto.exe file may need to go in a device specific folder. try N20, N20i, etc

I'm not at a pc atm but i'll have a search later.

Hi Fatboyfun i hope i haven't worn my welcome out because i am still struggling tried all suggestions so far no go but i have found this.
Yes, Navman is a MiTAC's brand as Mio, but it behaves totally different, if you want to get it started from SD-card. Probably you have to create at SD-card a special folder and put in this folder a "Auto.exe", that will start an application with which you can access the flashdrive of your Navman, e.x. CeCommander. What the special folder's name must be, you derive from file "source.txt" (in your back-up) in line "Software".
Here is what is in my source.txt.
Created: 2006-08-31 13:38:10:0671
Software: N20 4_10_0025
Map Detail: Detail maps, World Outline
Map Data: EU 4_02_015
Map Region: UK
Part Num: SW000338A
I have a full backup in Stg format and have got this with STGView can you tell from this what SD should be called also can't seem to find CEcommander thanks for your patience.

No-one outstays their welcome here :)

Right the file you want to look at (From your backup) is app_startup.txt
Open this file with notepad and scroll to the bottom
You should see something similar to these lines...

sdcard_runExecutable(SmartST_CE - Run()): CreateProcess(\Storage card\TATA_400A\auto.exe) failed, error 2
sdcard_runExecutable(SmartST_CE - Run()): CreateProcess(\Storage card\Default\auto.exe) failed, error 2

I've highlighted the important bits, Yours may be different.

EDIT: Total Commander here... 2765

Hi Fatboyfun Thanks for info i am on a steep learning curve i have managed to get original firmware installed it and have got sync back but it doesn't have software i presume only bootloader so i restored back up and am back to legal screen with calibration error so still don't know if it is software or screen itself

Wed May 04, 2011 9:41 am

I'm still thinking it's a hardware problem, But the next thing you could try is a full unlock, ie boot to a desktop, If you think it's worth it, I'd say we tried a couple of things, neither of them worked and it's an old device so prob not, FYI I'm getting a headache from trying to update a Navman S30 which has similar specs to the N20i.

Hi Fatboyfun i am using this as a project and really appreciate your input i now know that your calibration exe will load from sd if its in a folder N20 and renamed auto.exe although it just keeps repeating over i press the crosshair and it goes to each corner then back to center never completes .I have tried to load commander from sd but it only stays on screen for about 2 seconds the loads legal screen so i can't try the buttons any ideas why it should quit so quick when your exe stays
