One For Myself

Postby cieranc » Fri Jan 20, 2012 10:46 pm

Well, thanks to the good people here I've managed to:
Install Igo 8 onto my old Binatone X350 (which I use in UK and Europe),
Updated 5 TomTom Ones for the lads at work,
Added Igo8 and TT Nav 7 to a works NavMan S50,
Updated the map on a works Garmin Nuvi and
Just got TT Truck working right on a 32mb TT One XL for my mate.

Now that I'm officially a sat nav god :) I'm going to build one for myself.
I quite like the Igo 8 on my Binatone, it's simple to work with, but the internal battery is dead and it'll only last 5 mins tops when disconnected from a power supply.

So I'm thinking about a no-name Chinese unit. I see plenty of WinCE 6 units with 128mb RAM advertised and am wondering if this is the way to go. I would like:
7" screen, truck maps, the latest Igo setup and TT as well if possible on a WinCE 6, Angry Birds and a feed for reversing camera's.

Is this possible, is anyone running a similar setup and what do the experts recommend?

Tomtom does NOT work on WinCE 6, or most Double-Din devices!

Thanks FBF, I thought that was the case but wasn't sure if there was a fix/way around it.
What are the options for Truck maps from other sources?

The truck maps will be an important feature, I regulary run in excess of 80' long and over 65 tons.

There is a workaround but it creates more problems than it solves and is not recommended.

iGO Primo 1.2/2.0 has truck routing.

Any experience with the no-make Chinese units? Reliable? Or are all units as good as each other?

No personal experience...only what I've read here and elsewhere. Some people have very good results, some do not. Some are happy, some try to return the unit because it did not work from the start, or stopped working too soon. Some are glad they saved money by buying a cheap unit, some regret not buying a better or "name brand" unit from the start.
It seems to be a matter of 'luck'. Do you feel lucky..well do ya?:)
But that's just my opinion..I could be wrong.

:)
I did a quick search and it seems most faults are through tinkering with the firmware.

Think I'll give one a go!

Remember that changes to Windows or the registry cannot be undone without the firmware flashing tools if they cause failure to boot, These files can be impossible to find and the vendor is usually no help.

Is it possible to take a copy of these files from the device before starting anything?

Though thinking about it, I shouldn't need to be doing anything with the unit registry.

It's easy enough to dump the ROM, but converting it to the format the device wants for flashing is another problem.

Not normally.

Research any potential devices before purchase, So you know what to expect.

Truck maps contain data on low bridges and weight restrictions, and plans routes according to the dimensions of the vehicle you're driving.

Most of these units on Ebay appear to be the same, just from different sellers.
7" screen, WinCE6, 128mb ram, 4Gb internal rom, supports 16gb SD card, pre-installed with Igo8.

I've asked 2 sellers if they can provide the flashing tools with the device.

I sincerely doubt that it will happen like that. So, make sure that you completely back-up what is on the device [no matter what it is] before you do any editing of any sort!
If it ain't broke don't fix it!
ALWAYS BACK-UP YOUR FILES/FOLDERS BEFORE MAKING EDITING CHANGES!

Please do NOT post any thanks. Simply press the hand icon with the "thumb up" which is the thank you button.

Thanks, I've just bought a no-make unit with MediaTek MT3351 cpu, 128meg flash and 4gb (internal) ROM.

Problem is, when I connect to the laptop with the USB lead, I can only access the contents of the ROM (which is the Igo8 folder).

Is there a way to save all the software on the unit itself?
