The procedure will depend on which navigation system you have.

If you have the RNEG system and want to update the system software (firmware) then

copy the new files to an empty SD card
Remove the map SD card from the head unit
Start the engine - The engine must be running throughout the update process
Insert the update card into the card holder and follow the instructions
Wait for about 20 minutes for the update to complete

I believe it is a similar procedure for the RT systems only using a CD / DVD with the necessary files burned to it.
