Can you elaborate on this..?

Also is there any device settings outside of iGO? Sometimes there is a GPS status option that shows the GPS working.

I've done that several times, nothing worked. Even tried turning on FM just to see if that has any effect but it didn't. :/ Thanks for the effort Chas!
Any advice from anyone else is welcome

I am not sure what happened, how I understood it was: he tried to update the maps when he got the device because they weren't up to date and from there the problems started coming in. (I wasn't here as I was away at uni). So then when I got back there wasn't any files on the SD card not even the old GPS system.

There is an option to check GPS Information outside the iGO. But if I go on it I get 'OPEN SERIAL PORTS ERROR.' I've tried looking into that too but nothing ...

I do dear that (when the GPS module technically is okay !!) the WinCE's registry got corrupted.
However I have no clue whatsoever how to repair it - IF I am correct.
I know of some tools that can search for GPS port and baud, but since the device is CE6, they won't work :(
What you could try is PortTool.exe. do a google search, run it on your device and let it test the GPS module. I hope the results give us a clue if the module is working. If it isn't, your dad has only himself to blame.

This is not encouraging news.
There is no port found at all, so either the registry is corrupt or the COM driver is or is missing. (when technical nothing is wrong)
Do you have a manual for the device? A hard reset or removing the battery for at least 24 hours may restore the registry and/or driver. Or may not.
I can not promise anything. For more help, if possible, you need someone who has a more technical background.

There is a reset button on the device but I can't take out the battery

Then search how to do a hard reset. Often it's done by pressing the button for a minute or so, or there is a pinhole ... or the combination pinhole + button.
Again, I can't help much here. When you have a manual somewhere (in the box?) read it. Some CE6 devices have a safe area where the ROM set up is kept in. If that is the case, a hard reset may fix the ROM issues and get the GPS back going. On the other hand, many devices lack such safe area. So if the latter is the case and no one else comes with a solution, then it is the end! :(

Thanks, I'll look around.

See what Fatboyfun has to say as well

I suspect the GPS hardware has crashed, otherwise either the GPS hardware has failed, or there were files on the device that have been deleted which started or controlled the GPS receiver?

Normally completely disconnecting the battery often helps with resetting hardware.

Hi Dav,

Did you get this issue resolved? Looks like I have identical probs. After loading new map files it seems as if the gps receiver disappeared.
