I did some Googling and determined that the reason the GPS SW version is 0.00 is because the firmware for the Chpset is missing from the GPS. This apparently can happen on a failed upgrade or downgrade of the Chipset firmware. Garmin used a Sirf III chip on most of their 60 series GPS's but they also cheapend up an use a MediaTek chip on the last of the production run.
Unless you want to send it to Garmin for repair at a cost, You have little to lose here. They will also not return the exact unit you sent in.
If it was the Sirf III chipset the last version of the chipset firmware is available as:
[Please Register or Login to download file] You then would have to force load the chipset firmware into the GPS.
There is a procedure for this that I found online. I am going to copy it here in the event that the other page disappears.
1. Download the latest firmware file.
2. Double click the .exe and extract the files. The .exe can also be extracted with WinRAR/Winzip into the updater.exe file and the .rgn firmware file.
3. Since the unit won’t be recognized by the firmware updater on its own, use the following key combo: hold down the power button (on the top of the unit) and push the directional button in the up (“^”) position.
4. While holding those buttons down, double click on the Updater.exe file.
5. While still holding down the two buttons, make sure your GPS device is selected, and then click the “OK” button to start the firmware update.
6. During the entire firmware update process you need to hold those buttons down. Then when the update is finished, release and reboot.
I would imagine this force load proceedure will also work to update to update the other Sofware which is the operating system of the GPS.
Good Luck!!
