have a garmin drive 51 and looking at patching the firmware, but this raises a few questions?
1. what happens to the maps (etc) already on the device (are they unlocked, deleted, or left as they are)
2. If i want to add different maps to the device do i need to delete the original maps (depends on 1 above)
3. What are the best maps to consider NT or NTU or does it not matter when the firmware is patched ?

Only one particular region in the device's memory is affected, that's region 14 (hex 0E) which contains the main system software, a.k.a. the firmware, which is patched to remove Map Signature Verification (MSV). That doesn't affect existing official present or future maps such as Lifetime Maps or other maps purchased for the particular device, it simply allows devices which have MSV in their firmware to use unofficial unlocked maps.

No. The unlocked maps you add will be for different continents or countries than your device's initial entitlement. Conflict between maps would occur if you had overlapping areas or duplicated maps of different version releases.

Drive 51 can use either NT or NTU data however if an NTU version is available (Europe is particularly relevant), the corresponding NT maps won't have compatible ancillary files like JCV (JunctionView) or ASR (Automatic Speech Recognition) available for NTU-capable devices like yours, slightly different ones are made for NTU-capable devices. If an NTU version isn't available (e.g. North America, Australia/New Zealand etc.) then the NT mapping is suitable and the relevant additional files are available.

I am having problems patching my DriveSmart 61

1. I have the:

2. I downloaded DriveSmart 61 (2588) fw6.70.rar
3. I unrared the file and copied the garmin directory to the root of my sd card
4. I press a long press on the button on the back of the device, until I see: "turn off the device?"
I press "off"
5. I insert the SD card into the device

When I reboot the device by pressing the button on its back, it boots regularly and does not show the "Loader"

What am I missing?

If your device was from where the shown extract from GarminDevice.xml was obtained, then you have a Drive 61 not a DriveSmart 61. The latter has HWID 2588 and you need to use patched firmware for 2587 which is Drive 61's HWID. See this post.

I'm looking for the Drive and DriveSmart 51 (2590) fw6.70 patcher. I've searched and I'm unable to find it. Can anyone help with a download?

Please re-check your device's model name and HWID. Drive/DriveSmart 51 has HWID of 2586. The similar model named DriveAssist 51 has HWID of 2590.

Sorry I used the wrong name for the GPS, here's the info from the GarminDevice.xml file.

I previously patched firmware 6.20 a couple of years ago, and foolishly this week I thought I could just update the USA maps on my device, but it also updated the firmware to 6.70. In addition to the default USA maps I had UK maps loaded too for my trips there. It's showing a corrupt maps error on startup now probably because of the UK maps. USA maps still seem to work.

Do you have the firmware 6.70 patcher files for this unit? You would be a lifesaver for my UK trips if you do!
