No, that's wrong. Updater.exe V2.8.0.0 works on both 32 & 64 bit systems, I use it all the time. FireFox58's suggestion should work if you have Windows settings requiring you to run such programs as Admin.

The firmware of your device is this file that you mentioned gupdate.gcd so one way is to patch this firmware
For the people who do not have or cannot find their firmware they can downloaded from the official site with the assistance of web updater or express.
In case that you download a firmware from Internet is good to be sure that is the same HWID that is your device otherwise you may have problems.

If you make these questions obviously you are not familiar with these things.
If you are not expert, and you do not know the details, better if you trust those who know these things and know how to move.
2087 is the HWID of a Nuvi 57/58, is it correct? Is that your Device?

The page tells you to use Garmin Express to install it, if you want to download the file to PC you just need to right click on the page and select "View Source Page".
On the new page that opens, in the first few lines you will find the Direct Link (for example: [Please Register or Login to download file] )

Things to try to overcome a port error:

• Use another USB cable, sometimes a few don't work but another will. Even Garmin branded cable sometimes don't work properly with some devices.
• Change to a rear port of PC, don't use a front port or a hub. If using a rear port already change to a different rear port.
• Run Updater.exe as Administrator and in XP SP3 compatibility mode

Unfortunately, the Universal Patcher does not yet support the fenix 5X firmware.
However, this firmware contains a weak MSV, so you can unlock a non-Unicode map using gimgunlock-0.04 or use the Temporary authentication trick in the case of Unicode maps. See the Legend of the patcher ...

Tried running through this firmware patch with my newly purchased Drivesmart 61 LMT-S
Software version is 340 and even though I have tried incrementally increasing the number creating the gcu file by both 1 and 5 once loaded it stays as 340, I would have assumed this would change?
