could I please have a firmware to patch the device
Model: Nuvi 57
Hardware Version: Nuvi 57 C2p2 A V7 4GB 64MB DZ XT TE
Software Version : 4.60
GPS firmware : 6.17.07

Welcome to the forum, the way to determine the firmware for any device is via the HWID as not all devices with the same name have the same firmware, using the wrong firmware can "Brick your device"

<PartNumber>006-B2087-00</PartNumber>
<SoftwareVersion>460</SoftwareVersion>
<Description>nüvi 57</Description>

In this instance 2087 is the known HWID for all nüvi 57-58 models.
This board requires you to be registered and logged-in to view hidden content.

Follow these Instructions
Make sure your device is fully charged.
Unpack contents to fresh SD card formatted FAT32
Ensure your device is fully OFF (not in standby), insert the card into your device and power on.(If the battery is poor use the power cable to power on)
"Loader" will appear on screen for a while then the device will boot up when the flash of patched firmware is complete.
Your device may reboot its self during the process just be patient.

Your SD card will have a new file named 154.bin this is a backup of the device's non-volatile memory region and may save your device later if needed,so keep a copy of it somewhere safe.

The loader screen doesn't appear. The device just reboots to the home screen.
Followed the steps as below
unpacked the rar to the SD card directly. The SD card is formatted to FAT32.
I switched the device off before putting the SD card by holding the power button till it prompted for device will be turned off.
I put in the SD card
I pressed the power button and the device booted to the home page. It did not even recognize the SD card I think.

so what did I do incorrectly? should I be extracting the final files into the SD card?

Use GarminCure3 or if your unit boots correctly, copy HID <PartNumber> here on forum.

Connect your unit to PC. In "Garmin" directory you will find GarminDevice.xml file.
Open it with Notepad.
You should find in text: PartNumber>006-Bxxxx-00</PartNumber>

Try another SD card better if 8GB than 32GB.Plug your nuvi 57 into your PC with the SD card in it to test if your nuvi 57 is seeing the SD card

To change to Mass Storage.
1. Bring up the volume screen on the GPS.

2. On the upper right hand corner. Press your finger on screen and hold for appx 10 seconds.

3. Shortly you will see the developers screen.

4. Find MTP Settings and touch it.

5. It will show 3 selections. MTP Auto Detect,Mass Storage and Mass Storage Single Session.

6. Touch Mass Storage as your selection.

7. Now select save and you are good to go.

Yes, it now shows up as mass storage.

<SoftwareVersion>460</SoftwareVersion>
<Description>nüvi 57</Description>

so what did I do incorrectly? should I be extracting the final files into the SD card?

YES

Make sure your device is fully charged.
Unpack/extract the contents of the .rar to fresh/empty SD card formatted FAT32
Ensure your device is fully OFF (not in standby), insert the card into your device and power on.(If the battery is poor use the power cable to power on)
"Loader" will appear on screen for a while then the device will boot up when the flash of patched firmware is complete.

Hi GarmanNuvi,
I followed the steps to the 't'
1. bought a new SD card for 8Gb
2. unpacked the .rar directly on to the SDcard
3. powered off the device by clicking off.
4. inserted the card
5. switched it on and it directly boots to the maps. No loader screen.

so decided to play around with garmincure3 so I first downloaded the latest drivers and installed them.
1. downloaded the .gcd file from Garmin website
2. used the .gcd file in garmincure3 to create cure and updater.
3. used the updater but updater is not able to communicate with the device
4. the device does not show up as a usb device. similar to image below but no USB device to select
5. the device is also not able to communicate using COM1 port at baud rate of 9600. It is also not able to communicate at other COM ports or Baud rates.

I went into the MTP settings of the device and changed it to mass storage and went through all the above steps again but it didn't work .

So I'm kind of puzzled now why it is not working.

Safer to unpack to PC then Copy paste to SD card

Hold the power button until it asks if you want to shut it down, otherwise it is only standby

Before you go trying to Cure an obviously working device there are other simple checks we can do.
Plug in the SD card to the device use a USB cable to connect your nuvi to your PC see if the SD card shows up in Windows explorer

Safer to unpack to PC then Copy paste to SD card

Ok, will do that

Hold the power button until it asks if you want to shut it down, otherwise it is only standby

Yes, I should have written it more clearly. I did hold the button till it asked to turn off

Before you go trying to Cure an obviously working device there are other simple checks we can do.
Plug in the SD card to the device use a USB cable to connect your nuvi to your PC see if the SD card shows up in Windows explorer

if the device is kept in MTP mode then it shows up only at 1 storage device. If I change the setting to Mass Storage on the device, it shows up as Garmin and SD card separately.

No idea what you are referring to, none of your pictures have been viewable.
All we are trying to do is eliminate a faulty SD card socket on your device as the cause.
